The city of Wichita, Kansas, is reeling following a mass casualty event Saturday afternoon that saw two people lose their lives and several more suffering serious injuries, allegedly due to the action of a female driver.

As KWCH reported, an individual driving a black pickup truck plowed through the youth soccer fields at the Stryker Sports Complex on Saturday afternoon.

A witness stated that several people were struck by the vehicle. One child and one adult were killed in the incident.

At the time of the incident, Kansas State High Schools Activities Association’s (KSHSAA) inaugural flag football semifinals were taking place on an adjacent field.

KSHSAA confirmed to KWCH that four Kansas City-area teams were playing – St. Thomas Aquinas, Shawnee Mission West, Shawnee Mission South, and St. James Academy.

Officials have not said whether any players from those teams were injured.

Wichita Police Captain Aaron Moses confirmed during a press conference that two people were killed in the incident and revealed that they had taken the driver into custody.

Moses added that there was no ongoing threat to the public. He did not say whether the driver acted deliberately.

“We have two fatalities confirmed here at the scene and multiple other casualties, with individuals transported to area hospitals,” Moses said. “The vehicle involved in this incident remained at the scene.”

“The driver of that vehicle is currently in our custody. There is no additional ongoing threat to the public from that drive.”

Moses added that two “juveniles” were inside the vehicle when it drove through Stryker Sports Complex.

The City of Wichita announced that all events were canceled until further notice.

During a press conference later Saturday evening, police identified the driver as a 34-year-old female from Garden City.

The two souls who perished were a 6-year-old boy from McPherson and a 35-year-old man from the same city.

11 people were transported to local hospitals for injuries. All but one had what are described as “traumatic injuries.”
