Carlos Alcaraz vs Daniil Medvedev preview
Second seed Carlos Alcaraz will face off against third seed Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals of the 2026 Vienna Open on Saturday.
Alcaraz booked his place in the Vienna Open semifinals with a 6-4, 7-6(2) victory over Tommy Paul in the quarterfinals. The Spaniard had to work hard in the second set, saving all five break points he faced before closing out the match in the tiebreak. He also defeated Karen Khachanov 6-4, 7-6(5) and Nikoloz Basilashvili 6-1, 7-6(11) in the earlier rounds, gradually building momentum after returning to competition following a wrist-related layoff.
Medvedev, meanwhile, continued his impressive run by defeating Adrian Mannarino 6-2, 6-3 to reach the last four. The Russian had previously overcome Cameron Norrie in a three-set battle, recovering from a set down to win 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(1), and defeated Daniel Merida Aguilar 7-6(5), 6-1 in his opening match. He arrived in Vienna fresh from winning the Almaty Open, where he defeated Nikoloz Basilashvili in the final, and has now secured qualification for the ATP Finals.

Carlos Alcaraz vs Daniil Medvedev prediction
Medvedev’s current form makes this a much closer contest than their overall head-to-head suggests. The Russian has won 18 of his last 20 matches since the US Open and arrived in Vienna on the back of titles in Hangzhou and Almaty. His flat groundstrokes, deep court positioning and ability to redirect pace could trouble Alcaraz, particularly on indoor hard courts where Medvedev can dictate from the baseline.
Alcaraz, however, has looked increasingly comfortable with every match in Vienna. His straight-sets victories over Khachanov, Basilashvili and Paul show that his level is improving, although he is still working his way back to peak form after his lengthy wrist-injury layoff. His ability to vary the pace, use drop shots and move Medvedev forward could be particularly important against the Russian’s deep positioning.
Medvedev’s recent results give him a genuine chance of another upset, but Alcaraz has more ways to disrupt his rhythm. The Spaniard’s improved movement and shot variety should help him find openings, while his ability to raise his level in important moments could prove decisive in a tight semifinal.
Pick: Alcaraz to win in three sets.
