Alexandra Eala will lock horns with qualifier Zhang Shuai in the first round of the Queen’s Club Championships 2026.
Eala started the season with a semifinal showing in Auckland but left the Australian Open without a win. A quarterfinal in Dubai, along with back-to-back fourth-round appearances at the Indian Wells Open and the Miami Open, were her other best results on hardcourts.
Eala was unable to attain a similar level of success on clay. A third-round showing at the Italian Open was the highlight of her time on the red dirt. Following a first-round exit from the French Open, she participated in last week’s WTA 125 tournament on grass in Birmingham. It turned out to be the right choice as she captured the title by beating Nikola Bartunkova in the final.
Zhang won the doubles title at the Australian Open at the start of the season but struggled in singles. She snapped her five-match losing streak by making the semifinals of the Merida Open. She then lost her next six matches, ultimately ending her losing skid with a second-round showing at the Madrid Open.
Zhang crashed out in the first round of the Italian Open but regrouped with a quarterfinal at the Strasbourg Open. However, she then lost in the first round of the French Open. She dispatched Hannah Klugman and Heather Watson to qualify for the Queen’s Club Championships.

Eala has already made a positive start to her grass swing with a title in Birmingham. She lost only one set throughout the tournament. Her win over Bartunkova in the final also marked her first against a Czech player, snapping her 12-match losing streak against them. She has compiled a 23-14 record across all levels this year.
Zhang has struggled to get going this year. Aside from a couple of good runs, she has usually bowed out of tournaments without winning a match or in the second round. She has won back-to-back main draw matches only twice this year. She has a 15-17 record this season across all levels.
While Eala hasn’t figured out clay, she has definitely shown an affinity for grass. She also has momentum on her side following her victory in Birmingham. As such, she will be favored to win against Zhang, especially in light of the latter’s poor form for most of the season.
