“Almost like he wants to kick somebody” – Paul Parker compares 26-year-old Manchester United star to Eric Cantona

Ex-Manchester United man Paul Parker has likened Matheus Cunha to Red Devils legend Eric Cantona, asserting the summer arrival has a resolute attitude similar to the Frenchman.

After helping Wolverhampton Wanderers avoid relegation past term, Cunha moved to the Red Devils for a reported fee of £62.5 million last summer. He has relished a decent first season at his new club, scoring nine goals and providing four assists in 33 games in all competitions so far.

Earlier this Sunday, the Brazilian impressed Manchester United‘s fans after netting the opener in a 3-2 Premier League home win over Liverpool. The 26-year-old star completed 21 of 28 passes and two of three dribbles, and also won four of 13 total duels during the heated encounter.

Speaking recently to The Sun, Parker asserted Cunha’s fighting spirit and dogged personality is almost akin to Cantona’s demeanour on the pitch. He commented:

“He’s a bit like Eric when he makes a mistake, he tries to sort it out straight away. Whenever he is tackled, he always wants a foul when he’s on the floor, and he’s very emotional. But his first thought then is to get up and almost like he wants to kick somebody, which was very much like Eric. When Eric knocked a bad pass, we used to go and see Eric try and go to win the ball back.”

Parker, who shared the pitch with Cantona a total of 75 times from November 1992 to June 1996 at Manchester United, continued:

“But there were nine outfield players just begging, ‘Please don’t go and make a tackle, Eric… please don’t’. But that was Eric just trying to make up for a poor touch or a wrong decision or execution. Because he didn’t believe in making mistakes and allowing other people to go and make good of it, he wanted to do it himself and Cunha is like Cantona in that sense.”

Manchester United told to sign four players

Manchester United icon Gary Neville has urged the Red Devils to rope in four new players in the summer transfer window following their 3-2 win on Sunday. He said on his Sky Sports podcast (h/t Metro):

“I think United need a left-back for next season because Luke Shaw has played every game this year and he may struggle. They need a centre-back, 100%, and they need two midfield players. They are the four priorities right now.”

After finishing 15th in the Premier League last campaign, Manchester United spent over £210 million on four players. With Casemiro set to leave and Maguire recently turining 33, they need to bolster key positions before their participation in the UEFA Champions League next season.
