Andy Reid- led Kansas City Chiefs made one of the more surprising quarterback moves of the offseason when they traded for Justin Fields. As Patrick Mahomes is still recovering from ACL and LCL surgery, Andy Reid admitted the team needed a serious insurance policy.
Chiefs acquired Fields from the New York Jets in exchange for a 2027 sixth-round pick. Reid’s men missed the playoffs in 2025 for the first time in 11 years and faced growing uncertainty surrounding Mahomes’ availability for Week 1 of the 2026 NFL season.
Thanks for the submission!
“Well, we snuck out and got a good quarterback to back him up,” Reid said at the NFL Annual League Meeting. “So, if he doesn’t, you know, if he’s not able to make it for the beginning of the season, then we know we’ve got a legitimate backup there that can go win games for us.”

Mahomes appears to be progressing well in his rehab. Reid revealed that the former MVP is spending seven hours per day in the building while pushing for an opening-week return.

“He’s doing great,” Reid said. “He’s in there for seven hours a day. It’s showing, the progress.”
Fields went 2-7 with the Jets last season after previously posting a 4-2 record with Pittsburgh in 2024.

Andy Reid already working on rebuilding Chiefs
Andy Reid is already deep into the Chiefs’ rebuild after a disastrous 6-11 campaign. The veteran coach believes the turnaround starts with a new-look running game. The Chiefs finished just 25th in rushing yards last season. Thus, the front office was forced to make a splash in free agency.
Chiefs landed former Seattle Seahawks star Kenneth Walker III. The 25-year-old running back rushed for 1,027 yards and captured Super Bowl LX MVP honors in his final season in Seattle.
“He’s a good football player, and it won’t change. He’s not gonna change coming to us,” Reid said. “As long as he stays healthy and moves forward, good things can happen for you.”
Walker’s arrival will give the Chiefs a major boost after Kareem Hunt and Isiah Pacheco combined for only 1,073 rushing yards. Reid also pointed to the offensive line as a reason the move could transform Kansas City’s offense.
The bigger challenge may come on defense. Reid lost Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson in free agency, which leaves major holes in the secondary. Reid, however, isn’t panicking.
“I’ve been in positions as a head coach where we’ve replenished the secondary,” Reid said.
Only time will tell whether or not the Chiefs under Andy Reid will be able to come back from a forgetful 2025 NFL season.
