Best Bets for Dec. 30: NFL

Week 17 of the NFL season concludes with the Detroit Lions taking on the San Francisco 49ers. Now, with the Vikings winning Sunday night, the Lions need to win to maintain their hold on the NFC North crown and the No. 1 seed in the NFC.

As for the 49ers, it’s been a rough year. Having been eliminated from the playoffs, it’s all about pride for them tonight—that and a chance to play spoiler for the Lions.

Lions vs. 49ers: Lions -3.5

These are two teams headed in opposite directions. San Francisco has struggled all season to deal with injuries. Their inability to do so has been apparent on game days. Detroit has had to deal with several injuries as well, especially on the defensive side of the ball, but has managed to find a way to continue playing at a high level.

Detroit is undefeated on the road this season (7-0) and 6-1 against the spread. San Francisco is 4-4 outright and against the spread at home this season. After Monday night, it will be 4-5 SU and ATS.

• Jahmyr Gibbs, OVER 94.5 Rushing Yards at -113
• OVER 18.5 Rushing Attempts at -114

In the first game without David Montgomery splitting time in the backfield with him, Gibbs carried the ball a season-high 23 times for 109 yards and a touchdown. Since the Lions still need to win, Gibbs will probably see another 20-carry day in hopes he can take advantage of a struggling 49ers defense—which he will, of course.

• Brock Purdy, UNDER 1.5 Passing Touchdowns at -114

If this was last year’s 49ers we were talking about, there is no way this would be a ‘best bet.’ But this year’s 49ers have struggled this season. Purdy only has 17 touchdown passes this season and less than 1.5 in nine of the 14 games he played in.

While the Lions’ defense has been decimated by injuries, they are still one of the top units in the NFL (No. 7 in scoring). Purdy will be lucky to get one passing touchdown in this game; he will not get two.

Best Bets for Dec. 30: Music City Bowl

Iowa vs. Missouri

Iowa has a top-notch defense, and while it lost a starting cornerback to the portal, it should still be up to the challenge of slowing down a Missouri offense that is down two wide receivers and an offensive tackle. The Hawkeyes lost their starting running back but should be okay anyway.

However, Missouri had a solid run defense and should keep Iowa’s low-scoring offense from getting out of hand. But Iowa’s defense will probably do the same to the Tigers’ offense.

• Marcus Carroll, RB, Missouri: Anytime Touchdown +125

Nate Noel was the primary back for the Tigers this year, but when they needed to get in the end zone, Missouri called on Carroll, who had 12 touchdowns this season to three for Noel. Iowa’s defense will not make it easy, but Missouri’s bread and butter in the red zone is Carroll.

• Kamari Moulton, RB Iowa: UNDER 67.5 Rushing Yards at -114

Iowa is a run-oriented offense without its primary running backs since Kaleb Johnson has opted out to get ready for the NFL. So, Moulton, a freshman, will likely see the bulk of the carries against a solid Missouri run defense. The Hawkeyes are probably planning on using a committee approach, so he may not get the carries he needs to get into a rhythm.
