BILL MAHER DEMANDS TO «DEFUND NPR AND PBS»: «They’re crazy far-left outlets that don’t deserve taxpayer money»
Comedian and political commentator Bill Maher has launched a scathing attack against public broadcasters NPR and PBS, demanding the government stop funding them with taxpayer dollars. His remarks come amid a contentious congressional hearing where executives from these organizations faced tough questions over their blatant liberal bias.
«They’re Crazy Far-Left»: Maher Pulls No Punches
On his show Real Time, Maher didn’t hold back, labeling NPR and PBS as radically biased outlets and mocking former NPR CEO Katherine Maher (no relation) for claiming they are «completely impartial.» «Oh please, ma’am, don’t make me laugh,» he fired back, arguing these networks have lost all journalistic credibility.
«We’ve outgrown the era where these outlets made sense,» Maher said. «In a country this polarized, where Republicans and Democrats see each other as existential threats, there’s no room for government-funded media that clearly favors one side.»
Why Should Taxpayers Fund Progressive Propaganda?
Though known for some liberal views, Maher has been a consistent critic of the far left. This time, he stressed that NPR and PBS no longer serve their original purpose of providing balanced news. «If they want to be activists, do it with private money—not public funds,» he demanded.
The host recalled that decades ago, when bipartisanship was more common, these outlets could justify their existence. But in today’s culture-war era, taxpayer funding is unacceptable. «Republicans have tried to cut their funding for years, and now even liberals like me agree,» he admitted.
Congressional Hearing Exposes NPR and PBS Double Standards
The recent testimony of NPR and PBS executives before Republican lawmakers only made them look worse. They were grilled over biased reporting, censoring conservative voices, and their obsession with progressive narratives. Despite their denials, examples of slant are overwhelming—from skewed Trump coverage to burying Democrat scandals.
«If they were honest, they’d admit they’re a media arm of the Democratic Party,» one congressman blasted during the hearing. «Instead, they insist they’re ‘fair’ while spending millions in public dollars to push their agenda.»
The Future of Public Media: Privatize or Perish?
Maher isn’t alone in calling to end federal funding for NPR and PBS. Even moderate left-wing voices now admit these organizations have become partisan tools. «If they want to survive, let them compete in the free market,» the comedian argued.
As Congress debates budget cuts, one thing is clear: the public media model is obsolete in today’s America. And if NPR and PBS don’t reform, they might vanish from lack of public support.
