Body Cam Footage Reveals Maryland Democrat State Sen. LIED to Police About Drunken Hit-and-Run — Cops Let Him Walk Without a Sobriety Test as He Says “Governor Will Take Care of It”

Newly released body-camera footage and surveillance video have raised serious questions about Maryland Democratic state Sen. C. Anthony Muse after his Land Rover struck a parked vehicle and ended up partially on a sidewalk and on top of a tree.

The footage, obtained by Gary Collins of Spotlight on Maryland and reported by Fox Baltimore, shows Muse telling officers that his “driver” had parked his Land Rover Defender on a sidewalk and against a tree, an account that surveillance video directly contradicts.

The video shows Muse himself behind the wheel, maneuvering the SUV for several minutes before getting out and walking away alone.

The incident began shortly after 8 p.m. on Aug. 3 in Annapolis’s Eastport neighborhood while the Maryland General Assembly was meeting in special session over congressional redistricting. Muse’s SUV struck the mirror of a parked vehicle, and witnesses say he didn’t stop.

One caller told dispatchers she was “pretty sure he is intoxicated.”

Surveillance video shows Muse’s SUV later maneuvering for several minutes before coming to rest partly on the sidewalk and on top of a tree in the 400 block of Fourth Street. Annapolis parking enforcement issued a $100 citation.

When parking enforcement officers approached, one radioed to police: “The senator just entered the vehicle. I’m not sure he should be driving.”

About three minutes later, the same officer called again: “I was able to get the keys from him. I’m just keeping him talking.”

When Annapolis police officers arrived and questioned Muse, he claimed his driver had parked the vehicle. 

“My driver actually parked here,” Muse told officers, according to body-camera footage. “I’m actually down here for the special session. My driver parked the vehicle and left to go home.”

But the surveillance video tells a different story, Muse was the one driving.

Muse also referenced state leadership as officers worked to resolve the situation, claiming the governor or government would “take care of it.” 

Police declined to conduct a sobriety test and allowed another licensed driver to take Muse’s SUV from the scene.

Officers initially claimed they never encountered Muse sitting in the driver’s seat, a claim directly contradicted by video showing an Annapolis parking enforcement officer talking to Muse while he was in the driver’s seat.

Annapolis police initially said there was “no crime reported to Annapolis Police that required an investigation.”

Late Friday, after Spotlight on Maryland pressed the department and provided surveillance footage, police reviewed officers’ body-worn camera footage and confirmed that Muse told them he had consumed alcohol, according to Fox Baltimore.

“The owner of the vehicle stated he had one drink,” police wrote. “The owner called someone to pick up the vehicle. A licensed driver retrieved the vehicle.”

If a Republican pastor-legislator had done this in a red state, the national media would still be running it. In Wes Moore’s Maryland, Annapolis police cancelled the tow, skipped the sobriety test, let another driver remove the Land Rover, and initially told reporters there was nothing to investigate.

Muse returned to the Senate floor. No charges have been announced.
