Portugal have suspended Cristiano Ronaldo for 30 days after he walked out of the national team camp. The 41-year-old has also been handed a €255 fine after missing games against Norway and Denmark.
Ronaldo admitted that he deserved to be punished in the lengthy statement released earlier this month, after saying that his decision to walk out of the camp should not be brushed under the carpet. Some reports suggested he was also considering retirement, but he has since confirmed he will be available for upcoming matches.
Thanks for the submission!
The Portuguese Football Federation confirmed in a statement earlier this month that they were taking action against the captain. They revealed that the investigation had begun and said:
“The initiation of disciplinary proceedings against Cristiano Ronaldo, by deliberation of the Non-Professional Section, on October 9, 2026, with the purpose of the investigation of any disciplinary relevance of the facts participated on October 7.”
“Without prejudice to the automatic preventive suspension to which he was subject until the date of establishment, the non-automatic preventive suspension of the player was determined, and the urgent nature was attributed to the process.” (via Fabrizio Romano)
Cristiano Ronaldo is likely to make the squad for UEFA Nations League matches against Wales and Denmark next month, depending on whether his suspension starts from the date he walked out (September 30) or the start of the investigation (October 9).
Cristiano Ronaldo left Portugal camp due to a misunderstanding, claimed PFF president
Pedro Proença, president of the Portuguese Football Federation, said the 41-year-old walked out of the national team camp because of a misunderstanding with the coach, Jorge Jesus. He added that the captain would return soon and they would do everything possible to convince him to play in the upcoming matches.
“What happened between him and Jorge Jesus was simply a misunderstanding that needs to be resolved internally. Cristiano is part of the national team; he is our icon, and he captained the team in the first of the four matches. Cristiano Ronaldo is a Portuguese icon and an exceptional player. He could have ended his career at the World Cup, but he didn’t because of his love for his national team.”
“I can attest to the bond he shares with the Portuguese people and our national team. Now that the four matches are over, we have the time and calm to sit down together and resolve the misunderstanding. Cristiano is part of our legacy, and he will always be here whenever the coach wants him.”
Cristiano Ronaldo has played 234 matches for Portugal so far, scoring 146 times.
