Will Ospreay is currently in his first reign as the AEW World Champion after winning the title at All In: London following his victory over Kenny Omega in the main event. The Aerial Assassin recently defended his World title on this past week’s Grandslam: Paris edition of Dynamite against Kazuchika Okada. Just a few days later, Ospreay suddenly made his return to New Japan Pro Wrestling.
While Ospreay is currently reigning as the AEW World Champion, he is also one-third of the Never Openweight Six-Man Tag Team Champions alongside Henare and Great-O-Khan in New Japan Pro Wrestling. While the Aerial Assassin is set to defend the titles at NJPW’s upcoming King of Pro Wrestling event, he made a surprise appearance at a recent house show in Niigata.
After his surprise return to New Japan, Ospreay gave an interview after the event. He said that he hadn’t done a house show like this in a very long time and he missed them. He stated that he just randomly decided to pop by to surprise the New Japan fans.
“Big surprise, eh? Bet you were shocked. BILLY GOAT showed up at the house show. This place is… Niigata, right? It’s been quite a while since I last did a house show. I’ve been missing this kind of thing… Got here about two hours ago and thought, ‘Yeah, might as well pop in.’,” he said. (translated from Japanese)
It is very rare to see the AEW World Champion make an appearance for another company’s house shows.
Will Ospreay took to X after making his return to New Japan Pro Wrestling
Will Ospreay has been on a very hectic schedule for the past few weeks. He first defended his World title against Jon Moxley in a brutal main event at All Out in Chicago. He then stepped into the ring against Ricochet at the PAC tribute edition of AEW Dynamite last week. On this week’s edition of the show in Paris, the Aerial Assassin succesfully defended his title against the Rainmaker.
Following all of this, Ospreay flew all the way to Japan and made a surprise appearance at New Japan Pro Wrestling’s recent Road to King of Pro Wrestling event. After shocking the fans in Niigata, Billy Goat took to X and wrote this:
“House show baby,” he wrote.
Will Ospreay will defend his Never Openweight Six-Man Tag titles against Jeff Cobb, OSKAR and Yuto-Ice.
