Tennessee coach Kim Caldwell seemingly breezed past Ole Miss’ Yolett McPhee-McCuin after the Volunteers’ 94-81 loss to the Rebels in Mississippi. Caldwell seemed uninterested in having the customary post-game handshake.
College basketball analyst Cassie Chantel saw the move and called out the Tennessee coach.
“Now, Kim, I usually like to address coaches as coach, but I got to talk to you person to person. Kim, I know you didn’t speed pass Coach Yo after a loss during Black History Month. As a matter of fact, the handshake was shorter than Black History Month, Chantel said on Instagram.
“And before y’all say, don’t make this a race thing, this is America. These are professionals in high spaces. We have to look at the optics.
“And if the roles were reversed, I would have gotten push notifications from ESPN, Apple News,
Fox would be picking this up right now. Y’all know the script. Then we get into the post-game presser, and Coach Caldwell speaks as though she was okay with the outcome of the game.”
Tennessee was no match for Ole Miss on Tuesday. In fact, the Rebels led by as many as 26 points in the third quarter. Cotie McMahon was phenomenal in the forward role, putting up 39 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 assists.
The loss was Tennessee’s eighth this season and its fifth in the last seven games. Caldwell seemed eager to head to the locker room as soon as possible following the loss.
What’s next for Kim Caldwell’s Volunteers?
Kim Caldwell’s Tennessee Volunteers are going through their worst patch of the campaign. They’ve lost more games in the last seven than they did during their first 18.
The loss against the Ole Miss Rebels would have stung due to the rivalry between the programs. It’s one Kim Caldwell knows well, as she’s been with Tennessee since 2024.
Next up is a showdown against the Texas A&M Aggies. The Aggies are 10-11 (3-9) and just recently broke a six-game losing streak.
This is a game that Tennessee has to win if it’s looking to get back on track ahead of March Madness. They have three consecutive games against ranked opponents after their Aggies showdown.
