Excerpt from Michelle Dorrance’s essay “why antiracism work is important to me“:

In my era, to be a faucet dancer is to be an envoy to the world for the unsung historical past of a Black artwork kind. Taught, inspired, and impressed by our elders to be greater than dancer/musician-performers, my era strives to be educators, creators, innovators, preservationists, and historians. It’s our job to inform the historical past of faucet dance as a celebration of Black tradition and in addition the unending battle in opposition to systemic racism and white supremacy on this nation – the origin story of appropriation in American tradition.

In 2020, I’m part of the way in which this story performs out. I’m a white faucet dancer with Black cultural ancestors in a society that privileges white individuals and whiteness. I’m straightforward for white audiences eager to entry and expertise components of Black tradition to swallow. My whiteness is the explanation you could have heard of me earlier than two of my inspirations, Ayodele Casel and Dormeshia, to not point out the legendary inspiration, elder, and griot, Dianne Walker. It’s crucial for me, and people who seem like me, to acknowledge that. It’s crucial for us to struggle in opposition to racist norms which have outlined American tradition since its very origin. If we don’t do sufficient, this story won’t change.
