The Detroit Lions will wear their black alternate uniforms and Honolulu blue helmets when they host the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday evening (8:20 p.m. ET on NBC) with the NFC North division title on the line.
This marks the third appearance for the alternate uniforms this season, as the Lions wore them in a 42-29 win over the Seattle Seahawks on Sept. 30 and a 48-42 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Dec. 15.
They were initially scheduled to wear their 1950s throwback uniforms this evening, but decided this week to wear the black alternate uniforms instead, marking the first time since 2016 that the throwback threads won’t be worn.
The decision to wear black shouldn’t come as a surprise, though, as the uniforms were considered a reward from head coach – and former player – Dan Campbell after they won their first division title in 30 years last season.
The black uniforms feature Honolulu blue numbers outlined in silver beneath a “Lions” wordmark and sleeves stripes that are reminiscent of the racing stripes on a Ford Mustang and the vertical bars in their 1961-69 logo.
The Honolulu blue helmets feature a similar striping pattern down the center, as well as Bubbles – Detroit’s primary logo’s nickname – rendered in black and silver on the sides. The looks is complete with plain black pants and socks.
