A clip from the Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles preseason game got a lot of attention on Aug. 22, which involved New England coach Mike Vrabel.
Jen Welter, the first female coach in NFL history, was on the Patriots’ sideline. She joined the broadcast for a live interview to talk about how quickly women’s flag football is growing.

The interview went viral because Welter was very energetic and excited. At the end of the interview, the cameras suddenly showed Vrabel.

Note: In April, intimate photos of Mike Vrabel and Russini together at an adults-only resort in Sedona, Arizona, were published by Page Six. Russini was a senior NFL insider for The Athletic, so the photos led to a lot of discussion about whether reporters can have close relationships with sources and if that could create a conflict of interest. Russini later left The Athletic. Mike Vrabel also spoke to his team and the Patriots organization about the situation and the distraction it caused. Notably, both are married.

In the video, Burton introduced Jen Welter as the first female coach in NFL history. She made history with the Arizona Cardinals in 2015. Burton then asked Welter how that experience felt.
Welter answered with lots of energy. She said it was the “best time of her life with the best crew in the world.”
She also talked about the head coach who believed football was ready for a change and gave her a chance.
The conversation then moved to women’s flag football.
Welter was very excited about how fast the sport is growing. She said it has now reached 24 states, including Rhode Island. She also said women’s flag football is becoming a varsity sport in high schools and could become an Olympic sport by 2028.
Welter then shared a funny story about why she first wanted to play tackle football. She said she simply wanted to tackle people. That eventually led her to play in the Women’s Football Alliance for about 15 years before she started coaching.
The New England Patriots won the game 24-21 against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Aaron Rodgers rips ESPN over Mike Vrabel-Dianna Russini scandal
During an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show on Aug. 3, Aaron Rodgers criticized ESPN for what he felt was a double standard in how the Mike Vrabel and Dianna Russini situation was covered.
Rodgers wondered why there was so much attention on other off-field stories but very little discussion about Vrabel and Russini on major sports networks.
“You have literally an individual that maybe used to work at ESPN … and there’s a major scandal, and it’s just like nobody can [ ] talk about it,” he said.
Rodgers then talked about the NFL awards. He pointed out that Russini had an Associated Press vote for major awards, including MVP and Coach of the Year, which Mike Vrabel won for the 2025 season.
He said that close relationships between reporters and coaches can raise questions about whether information could be leaked or if the awards could be affected.
