Fed Goolsbee: Slightly cautious as newest CPI exhibits tariffs pushing up items inflation

Chicago Fed Pres. Austin Goolsbee is getting his last words and before the quiet period begins after the close of business today. The quiet period last until after the FOMC rate decision on July 30.

He says:

  • A little wary as latest CPI data shows tariffs pushing up goods inflation.
  • Pains me to see arguments about central bank independence.
  • Rates can go down a fair bit over the next year

Hinting to the more dovish side with the comment about “rates going down a fair bit”, but does not seem ready to cut yet.
