The FT is reporting that the EU and Ukraine are saying:
- US is prepared to provide intelligence assets in battlefield oversight to any Western security blanket for postwar Ukraine
- Will take part in a European air lead defense shield for the country
- US will be prepared to contribute strategic enablers, including intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, command and control and air defense assets to enable any European led the appointment on the ground.
What I read, is the US will provide defense systems which the EU/NATO will purchase. They will also provide non-battlefield type support (i.e. intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance).
In other words, the security guarantees will be at a distance, does not imply direct military response, but will provide defense capability that the EU and NATO can use to protect themselves (I assume the defense shield is similar to the Israeli Iron Dome).
The United States played a crucial role in Isreal Iron Dome by providing funding, joint development, and production support, particularly through Raytheon Technologies, which partnered with Rafael (an Isreali defense contractor) to co-produce interceptor missiles used in the system.
