Here’s a fun one for all you hopeless romantics out there.
In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, Giphy has shared a new overview of key Valentine’s Day trends, based on GIF usage behaviors throughout the year.
Which could be an indicative measure, and might actually provide more insight than your regular search trend report.
The new report looks at four key elements of romantic connection, and how GIFs are used to align with each.
Those four trends are:
- Cuffing season
- Situationships
- Summer flings
- Romance trends

As you can see in this example, each of these trends gets its own focus in Giphy’s report, highlighting key peaks and troughs for amorous connection.
And it includes invaluable insight like:
“According to search data from 2024, queries for “cuffing season” begin to climb in August, spiking by 198% compared to July. A broader look at fall search trends shows that queries for the term continue to climb before peaking in October with a 122.5% increase from the previous month. Searches for the term begin to drop shortly after with the downward trend continuing into the new year, reaching a low in June–July.”

So why is this relevant?
Well, if you were looking to plan your seasonal promotions, you could look to tune in specific elements to these romantic tides, which could also relate to broader astronomical anomalies and spiritual alignments.
And if you don’t believe in any of that stuff, then these notes could still help to inform your promotions related to dates and dating, based on GIF usage trends throughout the year.
Of course, that also assumes, again, that GIF usage is indicative of trends. Which it probably is, but that’s not definitive.
But essentially, if you’re looking for alternative angles for your marketing, and maybe new opportunities, it may be worth considering Giphy’s trend data in your planning.
