Google Expands Virtual Try On Tools

Google’s expanding its Virtual Try-On option to more clothing types, as it continues to develop new processes to facilitate more accurate depictions of items.

Originally launched for men’s and women’s tops last year, Virtual Try On uses AI to show how chosen items look on different body types “down to the shadows, wrinkles and draping”, helping to improve the online shopping process.

And now, Google’s expanding Virtual Try On to dresses as well.

As you can see in this example, the updated Try On process now enables you to visualize what dresses look like on different body types.

As explained by Google:

If you’re in the U.S, simply search for dresses on Search and click any style that includes a “try on” badge. From there, you can see what that garment looks like on a diverse set of real models, ranging in sizes from XXS-XXXL. Select a model that resonates with you to get a better sense of how the dress looks. Once you find what you’re looking for, click out to the retailer’s site to buy it.

It’s a significant advance in Google’s virtual depictions, which, ideally, will help people when making purchases online, by better displaying what the item looks like in reality.

Though it’s not reality, and that’s why in-store shopping will remain the go-to for many consumers on certain purchases. But ideally, virtual try on tools like this will make it a little easier to shop online, and avoid the annoying process of having to manage returns in the mail.

As Google notes, it’s rolling out the new Virtual Try On process on selected items in the U.S., with a view to a broader expansion in future.
