GTA 6 gameplay deep dive reveals main adjustments to motion, fight and weapons

The latest gameplay details for GTA 6 reveal that Rockstar Games is taking a more grounded and modern approach to gameplay systems. Instead of the arcade-style of gaming, the developers are moving towards a more realistic gameplay experience.

But at the same time, they don’t want to take away the feeling of the GTA experience and that’s why there have been some major changes to the movement, combat and weapons of the game.

These updates in GTA 6 overhaul core mechanics to make movement, gunplay, and character management more realistic and fun than in previous entries.

The game is moving away from keeping everything simple to adding layers that are not boring, but make every move worth planning. Here’s everything you need to know and why these changes will bring something exciting to the table.

Exploring the world of GTA 6 features several quality of life updates that modernize character control. The traditional control scheme of repeatedly tapping the X button (or A button for Xbox) to sprint has been completely replaced. Players can now toggle sprinting with a simple click of the left analog stick (L3), which is something we have seen in most of the other games.

Players can customize their default walking and jogging speeds inside the settings menu to fit their style. Stealth and maneuverability have also received significant upgrades. A dedicated crouch button improves your ability to take low cover and move quietly through dangerous places.

This change makes tactical positioning much smoother during missions. Water exploration will also feel different, thanks to expanded diving mechanics that allow players to do controlled directional jumps and acrobatic flips. Unlike the infinite scuba gear oxygen tank in GTA 5, the oxygen tank in GTA 6 will run out, meaning players will have to recharge it.

The new combat mechanics

Combat in GTA 6 shifts toward skill-based mechanics and to some extent, decision-making. The game moves away from aggressive auto-lock targeting by defaulting to a free-aim style.

Since most of the players will be playing the game on consoles, they can still adjust stickiness settings in the accessibility menu, but manual precision is now the standard design. Then there’s the slow-motion aiming ability as well, taken from Red Dead Redemption or Max Payne.

Players can target specific body zones to either kill enemies or just incapacitate them. This difference changes the flow of missions, allowing you to manage your criminal profile. To keep players informed during firefights, clear visual indicators come through color-coded hit markers that differentiate between standard hits, incapacitations, and lethal shots.

Weapon system in the game

The weapons system focuses on realism and limits how many guns players can carry at one time. Gone are the days of pulling an endless supply of rifles out of thin air or a bazooka from the back pocket.

Larger firearms must now be physically carried in the character’s hands or slung across their back. This is something taken from Red Dead Redemption and it will be a great addition to make things more challenging.

Carrying weapons openly changes how civilians and authorities react to you in the world. Pedestrians and law enforcement display immediate caution or hostility if they see an unsheathed weapon, and their reaction changes based on whether a firearm is pointed or held at rest.

Every firearm delivers a distinct physical punch through heavy recoil and authentic sound design. These changes encourage controlled bursts rather than mindless spray-and-pray shooting. Weapons also have extensive customization options to suit different playstyles.
