Hacks season 5 follows Deborah Vance and Ava Daniels across episodes 6 and 7 as they deal with two linked situations involving a proposed AI comedy tool and a mistaken assumption that leads to a staged relationship in Montecito. In Hacks season 5, episode 6 focuses on an offer from investor Graham Sweeney to use Deborah’s past comedy material to train an AI system called QuikScribbl.
Deborah evaluates the proposal but ultimately does not sign the deal after the terms expand to joke generation and broader creative use. Episode 7 then shifts to the fallout of a social misunderstanding that places both characters in a fabricated relationship setting. The episodes end with the AI deal declined and both personal and professional tensions left unresolved in Hacks season 5.
Hacks season 5 episode 6 recap: Why did Deborah reject the AI deal with QuikScribbl?

Deborah Vance analyzes a tech pitch from investor Graham Sweeney in Hacks season 5 episode 6. The idea is based on QuikScribbl, an AI system that uses performance data – including Deborah’s previous work – to generate written and funny material. It also raises questions of ownership of comedy material and commercial exploitation of creative work.
Deborah initially sees the offer as a business opportunity to grow her brand. Ava is worried about the use of creative labor to generate automatically, and the influence on writers. Their conversation turns into a spat about authorship and replacing human writers. In season 5, episode 6, the proposal moves from just replicating voices to making up fresh jokes.
After more stipulations are offered, Deborah rejects the contract, ending the episode. Episode 6 finishes without a formal AI proposal and with an open direction for Deborah’s research.
Hacks season 5 episode 7 recap: Why do Deborah and Ava pretend to be married in Montecito?
In episode 7 of Hacks season 5, Deborah attempts to acquire a unique performance attire linked with Carol Burnett. Deborah and Ava have a meeting with rival comedian Kelly Kilpatrick, who mistakenly believes the two are in a romantic connection.
Deborah does not quickly dispel the notion and continues the ruse to get the outfit. That means a staged excursion to Montecito with Kelly and his wife Monica. In episode 7, Deborah and Ava find themselves in tight quarters for a long time, and both have to keep their stories straight.
Ava and Monica bond during their stay, and as anomalies in the agreement mount, Deborah feels the need to handle the situation. The scenario also shows communication gaps between Deborah and Ava.
The episode concludes with Kelly and Monica clearing up the misunderstanding. The manufactured connection is thrown out, the situation gets fixed, and the underlying tension between Deborah and Ava continues throughout season 5.
Deborah and Ava’s conflict
Both episodes 6 and 7 of Hacks season 5 address narrative control but in different environments. Episode 6 is about external control and addresses the projected use of AI systems to reproduce and generate comic material. In episode 7, we switch to internal control by means of a false social persona in a manufactured romance situation in Montecito.
The QuikScribbl proposal addresses questions of ownership of recorded comic work, and of the usage of performance archives for automated output. Ava defines the problem around creative labor and authorship rights; Deborah frames it around career length and professional reputation.
Episode 7 asks similar issues about how we treat those around us. The manufactured connection involves constant modification of information communicated with others, producing a managed narrative within a social setting. Both episodes offer various situations in which identity and authorship are negotiated or read through external and internal paradigms.
Differences in terms of information access for characters are also shown in the Montecito plot. Deborah sees non-disclosure as a way of protecting herself, and Ava views Deborah’s disappearance and the withholding of information as a continuation of the pattern. This divergence still has implications for how each character approaches conflict and uncertainty.
Hacks seas on 5 episodes 6 and 7 are available to stream on HBO Max.
