“He argued with everyone” – Former Manchester United star Fred on Ten Hag expertise and latter’s falling out with Cristiano Ronaldo

Former Manchester United star Fred has spoken in detail about his experience working with ex-Red Devils coach Erik ten Hag and his falling out with Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ten Hag joined Manchester United with a big reputation backing him after his work at Ajax. In his two-and-a-half year stint with the Red Devils, the Dutchman helped the club with the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup. Despite his success in domestic competitions, his team’s performances in the Premier League didn’t go as planned.

Former Manchester United player Fred has spoken in detail about his experience working with Ten Hag. In the ‘Charla podcast’, he accused Ten Hag of being a poor man manager despite being tactically astute. He said (via GOAL):

“Ten Hag was tactically very good, but with the group he was a piece of c*ap. He argued with everyone. He argued with me, with Cristiano [Ronaldo], with Casemiro, with Rashford … He wouldn’t put me in to play; sometimes it got stressful. [With Ten Hag] Only his Dutch players played. A clique-ridden coach. But, tactically, one of the best I’ve ever worked with.”

Cristiano Ronaldo also decided to leave Manchester United after falling out with the Dutch manager. The club and he decided to mutually terminate the player’s contract in November 2022. Speaking about the falling out between the duo, Fred said:

“He wanted the team to run, but Cristiano [was already] older. He took Cristiano out [of the starting lineup], and then there was a falling out.”

Manchester United have had up-and-down seasons by their standards in the recent past. Managers Erik ten Hag, Ruben Amorim and others have struggled to put their stamp on the team. Michael Carrick was appointed earlier this year and led the team to a 3rd-place finish in the 2025-26 PL season. They hope he can be the manager to turn the tide around for the club.
