He has hardly ever accomplished his quota of overs

Former India player Aakash Chopra has noted that it would be premature to say whether Ravindra Jadeja has played his last ODI. However, he opined that Jadeja wouldn’t have been a part of the Indian team if the ODI World Cup were to happen now, highlighting that the spin-bowling all-rounder hasn’t fared well with both ball and bat lately.

India suffered a 2-1 defeat in the recent three-match ODI series against New Zealand. Jadeja was found slightly wanting in both departments, going wicketless and scoring 43 runs at an average of 14.33 in the three games.

In a video shared on his YouTube channel, ‘Aakash Chopra,’ the former India opener was asked whether Jadeja has played his last ODI.

“It’s a big statement to make. It’s true that his name was not there when the selection happened for the Australia tour. There was no workload management because he wasn’t playing T20Is in any case. So he didn’t play the Asia Cup. Axar Patel was there and he also did well, even though India lost that series,” Chopra responded (1:00).

“After that, Jaddu has been given chances. Jaddu played against South Africa and New Zealand. So he has played quite a few ODIs and he has rarely completed his quota of overs. He has taken one wicket in total in the last five or six games. He hasn’t scored runs and has conceded a lot of runs. This is the reality right now,” he added.

Chopra reckoned that Axar Patel is currently ahead of Jadeja in the competition for the potentially solitary spot for a left-arm spin-bowling all-rounder in India’s 2027 World Cup squad.

“There is a lot of time left. You don’t have to make that decision today. We will talk about it when you have to take it. However, the current truth is that if the World Cup were to happen tomorrow, would you have taken Jadeja? Only one of Jadeja and Axar can go. It’s South Africa. So I would have said no. Axar is ahead of Jaddu at the moment,” the cricketer-turned-commentator observed.

While Axar Patel was picked ahead of Ravindra Jadeja for the ODI series against Australia last year, the latter has been a part of India’s two ODI series against South Africa and New Zealand, respectively. The selectors are potentially ensuring that both players are given enough chances before they choose one between them for the 2027 World Cup.

“He will once again become a part of the conversation if he does well in the IPL” – Aakash Chopra on Ravindra Jadeja

In the same video, Aakash Chopra noted that impressive performances in IPL 2026 could help Ravindra Jadeja remain in contention for a spot in India’s ODI side.

“We don’t know what the circumstances would be after six months. However, Ravindra Jadeja is falling behind, there is no doubt about that. He has already left T20Is and there is no Test cricket for the next eight months. He will once again become a part of the conversation if he does well in the IPL,” he said.

While observing that he wouldn’t write Jadeja’s ODI obituary, the analyst added that the veteran all-rounder has underperformed lately.

“It is a fact that we were outspun by New Zealand’s spin. They bowled better than us. I am not going to say Ravindra Jadeja has played his last ODI, but his stocks have gone down radically. That’s also true,” Chopra stated.

Ravindra Jadeja has scored 99 runs at an average of 24.75 in his last six ODIs. He has picked up a solitary wicket at an average of 298.00 in those games.
