Seeing James on a golf course has become more common. He was recently spotted playing alongside fellow NBA players Kevin Love and Jayson Tatum in another clip shared by Love showing that golf has become a regular part of his downtime.

The 41-year-old is in the final year of his contract with the Los Angeles Lakers, and his long-term future is still unclear. Team owner Jeanie Buss recently said he has not publicly committed to returning for a 24th season which has added to the uncertainty about what he will do next.

LeBron James opens up about his growing obsession with golf

Away from the viral swing clips and fan reactions, LeBron James has been open about how deeply he has fallen for the game. Over the past year, he has repeatedly admitted that golf has taken over much of his free time.

During an interview after a win over the Utah Jazz, James even joked that his focus has shifted so much that he is no longer the right person to evaluate other NBA players.

“I’m the wrong guy to ask that question, champ,” LeBron told a reporter when asked about Keyonte George. “I watch YouTube golf these days… I’m more into the Bryan Bros, Grant Horvat, Bryson DeChambeau and the rest of those guys.”

His interest goes beyond casual viewing. LeBron James has become an active consumer of golf content online and often shares what he is watching. At one point, he posted about following the “Major Cut” YouTube series, where creators play famous major championship venues, joking that Oakmont would destroy his scorecard.

“Just got done watching one of Grant, George and Wesley’s Major Cut episodes… Remind me to never play at Oakmont CC guys! OMG! I would be a +100!”

LeBron James has also spoken about how surprised he was to become hooked on the sport after years of indifference.

“The bug is real,” he said on a podcast with Steve Nash. “I’ve heard about the bug for so many years… Nah, it’s real. I am into it. My algorithm on social media, every other post… is some type of golf video now.”

Despite the new obsession, he remains productive on the court, still putting up strong numbers deep into his 40s. But with his NBA career nearing its final stretch, golf increasingly looks like the outlet he may lean on once basketball is behind him.
