Instagram Adds New Views Insights to Guide Creative Performance

After making “Views” the primary metric of focus for creators last August, Instagram is now adding some new views-related metrics to help Reels creators hone in on the right elements.

Instagram view metrics

First off, as you can see in the first image above, IG is adding a new “View Rate” metric, which will show you what percentage of your viewers watched beyond the first three seconds of your clip.

As you can see, the View Rate display shows a comparison of the performance of this video clip versus your average retention, which could help to guide your planning. You can also filter the listing to followers and non-followers, adding further insight.

Understanding how to keep your viewers watching is a key consideration, because as Instagram recently shared, “Watch Time” is now the primary driver of Instagram reach.

As such, the longer you can keep people watching your Reels, the better your video content will perform, which makes this new metric display a valuable indicator of your performance.

The second image above shows the more in-depth new overview of “Views Over Time”, which provides another comparison of video performance among both followers and non-followers.

Again, this will provide more understanding of what’s working, and what’s not, in your clips, and enable you to focus on the core elements that are driving better performance, among both your established audience and newcomers to your content.

Finally, Instagram’s also added a new tips element within the performance overview for your video clips, which will also give you comparative data on each clip’s performance.

The notes are designed to give you a quick insight into the comparative performance of your clips, which could also help in guiding your decisions around content moving forward.

These are some handy additions, which will enhance the focus on views as a key metric. And they might also enable you to expand your audience reach and resonance, by showing you what you’re doing right, and wrong, in your video content process.
