Is Dean Ambrose coming again to WWE?

Dean Ambrose, aka Jon Moxley, officially departed from WWE in 2019 and joined All Elite Wrestling. At the upcoming SummerSlam 2026 premium live event, Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins are set to lock horns for the World Heavyweight Championship on the grabs.

The Stamford-based promotion has been advertising the Rollins-Reigns saga at the Biggest Party of Summer as the final chapter of The Shield. However, this saga is incomplete without Dean Ambrose, as he was a major part of the iconic faction. With The Shield’s final chapter set to be written at SummerSlam 2026, fans have been asking whether Dean Ambrose is coming back to WWE to be part of the end of the long-running saga, which he is also a vital part of.

The simple answer is no. Ambrose is currently competing in AEW as Jon Moxley and is under contract with the Tony Khan-led company until 2027.

WWE and All Elite Wrestling do not have a business relationship and consider each other business rivals, which bars The Lunatic Fringe from appearing at any Stamford-based promotion’s show for now, at least until he is under the AEW banner.

Can Dean Ambrose return to WWE for The Shield reunion?

Last year, on his Notsam Wrestling Podcast, well-known WWE analyst Sam Robert presented his take on whether The Shield should reunite, and he said it should happen before it’s all done and dusted.

“The only name that I could really, really think of is Mox, and if he came back, and he would probably come back as Dean Ambrose,” Roberts said. “And I would think that that would be the way to do it. But if he came back as Dean Ambrose, because then, I mean, think about not only are there all these matches that you could have, not only are those stories that you could tell, but you know whether you did it the night he came back, whether you did it later on.”

Moreover, he said:

“The idea of having Seth, Roman, and Mox in a ring together, even just looking at each other, I mean, buildings would crumble to the ground if that happened, it’d be so nuts.”

That said, with SummerSlam approaching, it will be interesting to see how the Rollins-Reigns Shield saga will be elevated in the coming weeks.
