Spain attacker Lamine Yamal reacted after becoming the youngest player to win the European Champonship and FIFA World Cup after a 1-0 extra time victory over 10-man Argentina in New Jersey on Sunday (July 19).
La Roja dominated proceedings, seeing over two-thirds of the ball, but were thwarted by an inspired Albiceleste custodian Emiliano Martinez, who eventually cracked at the 12th time of asking.

One of those 11 saves was off Yamal with virtually the last kick in regulation time, with the Aston Villa custodian brilliantly tipping away Yamal’s curling free-kick following Enzo Fernandez’s dismissal.
However, La Roja’s sustained pressure finally told in the 106th minute, with Torres firing home from close range after being set up by fellow substitute Nico Williams, who had seen an earlier effort get ruled out for offside in the build-up.

Former England striker Alan Shearer reckons Spain are the deserved winners of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after they beat 10-man Argentina in the 2026 final to win the competition for the second time.
Luis de la Fuente’s side had 20 shots on the Albiceleste goal – with 12 of them on target. While Emiliano Martinez saved the first 11, he was breached at the 12th time of asking by Ferran Torres, who had another effort ruled out for offside.
“There is no doubt that the right team won,” Shearer wrote on BBC Sport. “From start to finish Spain controlled possession, they were the ones looking to play football, create chances and get in behind. This is a result for football because of the way that they have played. Spain deserve it.”
Lamine Yamal and Co. are the first team to complete the European Championship-World Cup double twice, having also accomplished it 16 years ago in South Africa, beating the Netherlands 1-0 in extra time in the Johannesburg final.
