Drew McIntyre feared that his match against a top WWE star would be halted midway. The Scottish Pyschopath has feuded with top names in the promotion and has been part of some brutal matches over the years.
However, it’s his feud and trilogy of matches with CM Punk in 2024 that remains etched in the minds of wrestling fans. After months of berating and brawling with each other, they met in the ring at SummerSlam.
Thanks for the submission!
McIntyre won the bout, which included Seth Rollins as the special guest referee. The second match at Clash in Berlin saw Punk emerge victorious in a Strap match. This led to the final match of the feud at Bad Blood, which saw both stars go at it inside Hell in a Cell.
The match featured brutal spots with both wrestlers using weapons of all sorts. McIntyre was left in a pool of his own blood as Punk walked out as the winner. During a recent appearance on INSIGHT with Chris Van Vliet, the Scottish Warrior reflected on the match.
McIntyre said that they knew the story going into the match and there was no limit to what they could do given the disdain for each other. He said they had a simple agreement to not do any crazy stuff but use the cell as the weapon. The former WWE Champion then said that when he was bleeding during the match, he feared that the contest would be stopped.
“It was a little fright when I started bleeding initially and the blood was legitimately spurting out of my head and landing a couple of feet in front of me, which I’ve never seen before and was obviously not supposed to happen. I was worried that one, I would go out, and two, the match would be stopped,” he said.
Drew McIntyre mentioned that Triple H played a key role in keeping the match going, as he understands what it’s like to be in the ring. The SmackDown star was worried that all the hard work would be wasted if the match were stopped.
“It was legitimately scary for a second because I was like, ‘My god, after all this work this could potentially be stopped,’ and I just need to stay conscious and get through this match,” he added.
Drew McIntyre regrets not facing John Cena during his retirement tour
During the conversation with Chris Van Vliet, Drew McIntyre also opened up on a regret over not facing John Cena.
He revealed he wanted to get in the ring with the GOAT, and there was a plan for them, but it was changed. McIntyre said WWE decided to pivot in a different direction and went with the match against AJ Styles.
Drew McIntyre said it was disappointing that he didn’t get the opportunity to work with Cena, as he could’ve showcased what he could do on the mic.
