Lions vs. Panthers Prediction: Best Bet for Sunday Night Football

Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs (0) celebrates a touchdown against New York Jets with wide receiver Isaac TeSlaa (18) during the second half at Ford Field in Detroit on Sunday, Sept. 27, 2026.Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs (0) celebrates a touchdown against New York Jets with wide receiver Isaac TeSlaa (18) during the second half at Ford Field in Detroit on Sunday, Sept. 27, 2026.

The Detroit Lions and Carolina Panthers will face off in an NFC matchup on Sunday Night Football. Detroit enters the game with a 2-1 record, sitting one game behind the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC North. Carolina owns a 1-2 record, but they’re tied with the Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints atop the NFC South.

The Lions have featured one of the best offenses in the NFL this season. They’re third in the NFL, averaging 31 points per game. They also rank sixth in the league, scoring 0.467 points per play in 2026.

Detroit’s issues have come due to injuries on the defense. They’re without several starters in the secondary, and they’re giving up a league-high 31.7 points per game. They rank 26th in the NFL in points allowed (0.440) per play as well.

The Panthers are in a similar spot to the Lions, averaging 29.7 points per game through three weeks. They’re efficient, as well, ranking eighth in the NFL in points per play (0.454).

Similar to Detroit, Carolina’s been drastically better offensively than defensively. Even with holding the Falcons to only 3 points, the Panthers are giving up 27.7 points per game. They rank 23rd in the league in points allowed (0.415) per play.

The over in this game is so appealing because of the pace, though. Carolina is currently playing at the second-fastest pace in the MLB, averaging only 26.1 seconds per play. Detroit ranks 10th in the same category, averaging 28.5 seconds per play.

Both of these teams are going to look to push the pace, giving the offenses as many opportunities to score as possible.

These are two offenses that can score from anywhere on the field, but the red zone is going to be key here. Carolina’s been a relatively average offense in red zone touchdown percentage (61.5%), while Detroit ranks sixth in that category (78.6%).

The Lions and Panthers have featured the two worst red zone defenses in the NFL, though. They’re both giving up touchdowns on roughly 85% of their red zone defensive trips.

Overall, I’m expecting an efficient performance from both offenses, who will also look to expand overall opportunities with pace.
