Meta, Amazon and Nvidia lead the declines as AI spending concerns weigh on sentiment. The technicals help define what comes next.
The selling pressure in US stocks is intensifying, with the technology names doing much of the heavy lifting to the downside. The latest readings show:
The bigger decline in the Nasdaq 100 highlights the pressure on the largest nonfinancial stocks. When the market’s heavyweight names move lower together, their size gives them considerable influence over the indices.
What is behind the selling?
The earnings news has put the cost of the AI buildout back under the microscope. Investors are questioning how much companies need to spend, how they will fund that spending, and how quickly those investments will translate into profits. Meta’s spending outlook and plans for a new class of shares have added to those concerns. Strong revenue growth alone is having a harder time satisfying the market.
Higher oil prices and continued Middle East uncertainty are adding another layer of anxiety. That combination has encouraged a move away from growth stocks, with semiconductor shares also under considerable pressure.
Six of the Mag 7 are lower. Apple is the exception.
In the supplied snapshot, the moves show:
-
Meta: down 8.01%
-
Amazon: down 5.08%
-
Nvidia: down 4.37%
-
Alphabet: down 3.56%
-
Microsoft: down 2.19%
-
Tesla: down 1.33%
-
Apple: up 0.88%
Compared with the latest index declines, Meta, Amazon, Nvidia and Alphabet are each falling more sharply than both the Nasdaq Composite and Nasdaq 100. Microsoft and Tesla are holding up better on a relative basis, although both remain lower. Apple is the only one trading in positive territory.
So there is a clear split within the group. The selling is broad, but the intensity is different. Apple’s gain provides some support, while the larger declines elsewhere keep the pressure on the indices.
What are the technicals telling us?
The news helps explain the nervousness. The price action helps define the risk.
After moves like these, I want to know which stocks are breaking support, which are approaching their next key target, and what buyers need to reclaim to take some of the pressure off. A stock being down sharply does not, by itself, mean the selling is over.
In the video, I take a look at each of the Mag 7 stocks and the technicals telling the story. I outline the levels that keep sellers in control, where buyers could make a stand, and what would need to change to shift the bias.
