Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness is a biographical drama from 2024, directed by Johnny Depp. The film is Depp’s second as director after The Brave in 1997. It is a dramatized take on the life of Italian painter Amedeo Modigliani, and its source material was the play Modigliani by Dennis McIntyre.

The screenplay by Jerzy and Mary Kromolowski doesn’t dwell on the artist’s entire life but focuses on one concentrated period of it. The film is a co-production between the United Kingdom, Hungary, and Italy, and the producing companies are IN.2 Film, Salome Productions, Barry Navidi Productions, and Proton Cinema.

Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness premiered at the 72nd San Sebastián International Film Festival on September 24, 2024. Prior to its Italian release, the film was awarded the Cult Movie of the Year Award at the Capri Hollywood festival.

1) Riccardo Scamarcio as Amedeo Modigliani

In the film Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness Riccardo Scamarcio is the one who plays the role of Amedeo Modigliani. Scamarcio embarked on his journey as an actor in the early 2000s, and soon after the movie Three Steps Over Heaven (2004), he was noticed by a younger demographic of Italians.

Scamarcio continued his career path by participating in movies like Texas (2005) and Romanzo Criminale, thus gaining more recognition within the country. His role in My Brother Is an Only Child (2007) earned him a nomination for Best Supporting Actor at the David di Donatello awards.

Since then, Scamarcio has not limited himself to roles in just national projects but also international ones, such as John Wick: Chapter 2, for which he was featured in the lead role, and the 2024 Netflix feature Vanished into the Night.


2) Stephen Graham as Léopold Zborowski

Léopold Zborowski, the Polish art dealer and closest friend of Modigliani, is depicted by Stephen Graham. Graham’s career has been on the screen and TV, and his initial credits are movies like Snatch (2000) and Gangs of New York (2002).

The character Combo in This Is England (2006), portrayed by Graham, was his next venture, after which the actor went on to perform in several sequels of the same series.

He has been cast in Boardwalk Empire, Line of Duty, and Time, while also starring in motion pictures such as The Irishman (2019) and Boiling Point (2021). In 2023, he was honored with an OBE, and he has also been involved in the production side; one of his projects is the mini-series Adolescence, which he co-created.


3) Al Pacino as Maurice Gangnat

Al Pacino is an art collector, Maurice Gangnat in Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness. Over a span of more than fifty years, Al Pacino has been active in theater, film, and TV.

The actor has been honoured with an Academy Award, Tony Awards, and Primetime Emmy Awards, thereby becoming the Triple Crown of Acting holder.

Among the best works of the actor are The Godfather (1972), Dog Day Afternoon (1975), and Scent of a Woman (1992). Additionally, he has helmed a few projects, one of them being Looking for Richard.

Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness covers the seventy-two hours that take place in Paris in 1916. It is a story of Modigliani, the artist called Modì, who was fleeing the police and was thinking of quitting not only his career but also the city.

The plot is centered around his interactions with the artists Maurice Utrillo and Chaïm Soutine, and also his relationship with Beatrice Hastings. Modì seeks help from his art dealer Léopold Zborowski, but after a night filled with hallucinations and his mental state getting worse, he finds his situation getting worse when he meets the American collector Maurice Gangnat, who possibly could change his ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌future.
