Meghan Markle Was Negotiating to Appear in Guy Ritchie’s ‘The Gentlemen’, But Public Backlash within the UK Has Reportedly Led to Her Being Dropped From Consideration

They haven’t moved to the UK yet, but the problems have already started.

When it was announced – some four days ago – that Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, and their children would be returning to Britain after their dramatic departure six years ago, the British (and World) press went crazy.

The articles and op-eds multiply, with a never-ending stream of questions being raised.

Would Harry ‘keep his mouth shut’ to mend his relationship with his father, the King? Or would he continue to give interviews attacking the Royal Family?

Would the British taxpayer pay for their security costs?

Would they be invited to the King’s Christmas in Balmoral?

But one piece of news stood out: Meghan Markle would be negotiating to appear in the second season of Guy Ritchie’s Netflix series ‘The Gentleman’.

That would mark the return of the Duchess of Sussex to acting after a 10-year hiatus.

But the reaction of the public in the UK was, unfortunately, not good – and a couple of days later it arises that Meghan Markle has been ‘dropped from consideration’ to join ‘The Gentlemen’.

On Hollywood Reporter:

“In a column published Saturday on Substack, Brown, the former editor-in-chief of Vanity Fair and The New Yorker, wrote, ‘I learned this morning that the casting of Meghan Markle in season 3 of Guy Ritchie’s Netflix series The Gentlemen has been withdrawn. The backlash in the UK was so intense, it became untenable to go forward. This does not bode well for Meghan’s acting comeback in the UK’.”

The Telegraph was not so definitive in their report:

“The Telegraph also understands the deal could collapse after public reaction to the revelation, which would have marked a return to acting for the Duchess after 10 years.

It is understood that the hesitation is coming from Netflix, which declined to comment, or the Sussexes, who have not commented, and not the team behind The Gentlemen, who anticipated a large public response to the news.”

The offer of the role was reportedly ‘part of the decision-making process in the family relocating to the UK’ – but was not the sole reason.

The couple is to live in a private, non-royal residence outside London.

Harry and Meghan’s status as ‘non-working’ royals will reportedly remain unchanged.
