Meta’s taking the next steps with its AI tools, with the company launching its AI chatbot to users in the Middle East and Africa, enabling more people to utilize Meta’s evolving AI models.
As explained by Meta:
“We’ve officially launched Meta AI in the Middle East and North Africa with Arabic capabilities. With this new chapter in our expansion, millions of users across the region now have unlimited free access to one of the world’s most advanced AI assistants conveniently located in the apps you know and love, like Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger.”
The expansion marks a key milestone for Meta’s AI ambitions, and connecting the next billion users via its AI tools. Indeed, Meta further notes that Meta AI is now used by 700 million people every month, up from the 400 million that it reported in September last year.
The company has gone all-in on AI development, and is planning to spend around $65 billion on infrastructure investment to power its push this year alone.
That’ll also include around $10 billion for a new subsea cable development, the largest connective project in history, which will help to maximize accessibility for users in Africa and India specifically.
Which will eventually power this new age of AI functionality for these users, with today’s expansion being just the first step.
“As we continue Meta AI’s rollout across the region, users can anticipate continued launches of advanced multimodal features that enable greater creativity and connection. Beyond generating text, Meta AI is set to introduce tools like simultaneous dubbing for Reels content, AI image editing, and the highly anticipated ‘Imagine Me’ feature, which generates personalized portraits based on user photos and prompts.”
Yeah, I’m not sure Meta’s image generation tools are as anticipated as Meta seems to think, but Meta highlights that users in these regions will soon be able to “upload an image of the view from your apartment and ask Meta AI to reimagine a whole new world out there.”
“Want to envision yourself with a new hair color or style? Meta AI will be your makeover assistant. These innovations are designed to make advanced AI tools accessible to everyone, ensuring that creativity knows no bounds.”
Meta seems overly keen to push these generative AI elements to users, with in-app prompts asking you to imagine yourself in fantastical scenarios. That, to me at least, is not what social media is about, in sharing real images of real things that are happening in your real life.
But Meta has the usage data, and clearly, some people are interested in imagining themselves as aliens, or Olympic athletes, or whatever else.
I don’t see the value, but Meta’s once again pushing this as a key functional option for these new users.
Meta’s still working to bring its AI chatbot to all regions, though it remains hamstrung in Europe due to the EU’s more complex AI regulations. Meta executives have repeatedly criticized EU officials for slowing AI progress in the region, and impeding European consumers as a result, but EU officials are looking to take a cautious and measured approach to AI development, including the use of EU user data in such models.
But eventually, Meta’s hoping to get more people connected to its AI tools, as it looks to establish itself as a leader in the space. And while I don’t think that image generation is the technological leap that Meta seems to suggest, I do think that the next stage of AI creation, in building more complex AR and VR experiences, by simply speaking them into existence, will be significant, and will be a critical evolution of Meta’s AI tools.
As such, this latest expansion is important in the broader scheme, and will eventually enable Meta to establish more expansive utility for its AI tools.
