Mike Lee Says SAVE America Act Is Moving in a “Very Favorable Direction” — Senate GOP Now Debating HOW to Advance Election-Security Measure

The relentless pressure from President Trump, conservative lawmakers, and grassroots voters may finally be cracking the Senate logjam.

Senator Mike Lee emerged from a closed-door Senate Republican meeting Wednesday with the strongest indication yet that GOP leaders are preparing to advance key provisions of the SAVE America Act.

“Things are moving in a favorable direction,” Lee announced following the meeting.

According to Lee, the Republican conversation is no longer centered on whether senators should remain in Washington and address election security. The focus has shifted to choosing a procedural vehicle capable of getting the legislation across the finish line.

Lee thanked Senate Majority Leader John Thune and Republican Whip John Barrasso for leading what he called a productive discussion.

WATCH:

For months, Lee has been the tip of the spear demanding the Senate actually pass the election integrity bill that President Trump has made a top priority.

The SAVE America Act requires proof of citizenship to register to vote in federal elections and photo ID to cast a ballot. It is pure common sense. The American people support it by overwhelming margins. Democrats hate it because it makes cheating harder.

The House has already passed versions of the bill multiple times. In the Senate it has been blocked by the filibuster and by a handful of Republicans who refuse to force the issue. Thune has repeatedly insisted the votes simply are not there to “nuke” the filibuster and that Democrats will never provide the ten votes needed under regular order.

Lee and a growing group of conservatives have rejected that defeatism. They have pushed talking filibusters, keeping the Senate in session through August, and now the reconciliation route via the House-passed $95 billion budget package that could carry key SAVE provisions with only 51 votes.
