An entirely new style of cap is making its way to the Major League Baseball field for the 2025 MLB All-Star Game this week in Atlanta.
For this year’s edition of the Midsummer Classic, New Era has introduced a restructured crown panel construction on the league’s on-field caps. The new silhouette, to be first worn during All-Star Game workouts and Home Run Derby on Monday before being worn in the main event on Tuesday, features a flat, seamless front and a wider, squared shape.

“We’ve seen this silhouette trend grow, especially in golf, where flat, seamless panels are popular,” said Tim Shanahan, Senior Director of Licensed Products at New Era Cap, in a recent conversation with SportsLogos.net. “For the All-Star Game, we always try something new. In San Diego [in 2016 for Workout Day], we did a split panel like the old helmet; in Cincinnati [in 2015], stripes like the old bucket cap; and in LA [in 2022], we went with a full trucker look. This year felt like the right time to try something different again.”
New Era began producing fully customized cap designs for the MLB All-Star Game in 2014, when all players had a simple white front panel added to their usual cap design. Since then, a new cap for the game has been produced each year, with the designs for the past three games based loosely on the special style of jersey that had been paired with them. With the players returning to wearing their standard team jerseys for the game in 2025, the caps will appear more like their usual regular season designs.

Shanahan noted that the All-Star Game typically serves as a testing ground for experimental uniform design ideas.
“This new silhouette gave us a chance to place the stars differently, instead of the smaller ones we usually position around the vent holes,” he explained. “On the inside of the cap, we’ve added a pattern inspired by the canopy structure at The Battery in Atlanta. We also added 13 stars on the sweatband to represent the Georgia flag. We try to incorporate local inspiration and Easter eggs into the All-Star Game caps.”
The design process for each All-Star cap, as with any special event cap, begins about a year in advance. “We come up with multiple concepts internally based on trends we anticipate for the following year,” Shanahan said, adding that the league ultimately chooses from one of those concepts.

This marks the first time MLB’s All-Star cap has featured a fully redesigned crown structure, rather than a surface-level graphic update.
While previous All-Star designs featured new colourways or graphic overlays, this year’s look centres on that structural change. The redesigned silhouette appears across the usual multiple New Era cap variations, including on-field player caps and retail versions.
The cap will remain a one-off for in-game use, for now.
“These are one-time event caps,” Shanahan confirmed. “When it comes to regular season, everyday caps, I don’t see us moving away from the traditional 59FIFTY any time soon. It will be used in other fan styles, however, allowing us to place larger badges and a different canvas for future designs.”

Despite the significant visual shift in shape, Shanahan said the cap remains close in feel to a traditional fitted: “We haven’t had much player feedback yet, but the shape is still pretty traditional. Compared to something like an A-frame, this silhouette still looks like a regular fitted cap when worn.”
“MLB trusts us. If we say a silhouette is trending and we think fans will respond well, they support us,” he said. “Once fans start showing up to the ballpark and buying the merch, they’re on board.”
This year’s All-Star Game is being held at Truist Park in Atlanta, Georgia, home of the Braves. The entire collection of New Era’s new 2025 All-Star Game cap design is available through the MLB Shop.
