With the top CBS commentator duo in a state of flux, many have speculated about what’s next for the duo. J.J. Watt has been named the interim, but who will be the successor if one is appointed?
One Awful Announcing article posted on X on Saturday has sparked a reaction from fans. The article suggested Rodgers could take over after his NFL career concludes.

“No no and no….. he’s more unlikable than Joe Buck or Chris Collinsworth combined,” one posted.
“No one wants tin foil on their broadcasts,” another added.
“Hell no when he’s retired I never want to see Rodger’s again arrogant prick,” one replied.
While many fans only vetoed the idea, others pointed to different names instead of the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback.
“Go after Philip Rivers! Would be great on TV and would never have to worry about a scandal!” one recommended.
“Call up Greg Olsen agent and see how you can get him out of Fox,” another suggested.
“I’d rather watch JJ Watt over all of these guys. He’s fantastic, and it’s not like he’s a no name,” one argued.
The network will have to plot a long-term course forward at some point. However, with Tony Romo out and Watt in until further notice, the network may have a vacancy to fill deeper in its commentator ranks as well.

With J.J. Watt heading north in the CBS commentary roster to replace Tony Romo temporarily, it leaves a spot open for another name to slide in to fill Watt’s vacancy. The prerequisites for the job are seemingly clear: the role would require a former member of the NFL still interested in the league who has a desire to do the job and natural charisma. It would also be a bonus if the player has media experience.
Jon Gruden could be one candidate, as the former head coach is set to make a preseason return to the broadcast booth as a play-by-play analyst, per Ira Kaufman via 95.7 WDAE in a post on X.
Gruden spent years as the color commentator on Monday Night Football as well, so the former coach has perhaps as much experience as anyone and would be an asset if he can handle a de facto preseason audition.
Another option would be Ryan Clark, who has remained active on social media and has spent time working for ESPN. It would be a slightly different context compared to his role on various talk shows, but Clark might make sense as one of the least rusty free members of the media.
Another current player on the edge of retirement could be Joe Flacco. Flacco has taken numerous pay cuts and demotions over the years to extend his time near the gridiron. Once his retirement eventually happens, the next closest job to the gridiron would be in the broadcast booth.
