After unveiling new home and road designs earlier this summer, the Nebraska football program revealed new all-black alternate uniforms on Saturday morning that will debut against Washington on Halloween.
The uniforms are nearly identical to the Cornhuskers’ red home and white road looks, aside from the metallic red “Huskers” script on the sides of the helmets, two “crop row” stripes down the center and the metallic red “Nebraska” wordmark across the chest.
These details are supposed to reflect the experience of a night game at Memorial Stadium, including bright red fireworks and flames that shine above the scoreboard after touchdowns and the glow of the video boards against the sold-out crowd.
On the back of the jerseys beneath the program’s new custom number font is a perforated Block “N” to mimics the drone show that marks the start of the fourth quarter, while “A Winning Tradition” is sewn into the back collar to note how Nebraska wins over 81 percent of its night games.
The number font, meanwhile, is inspired by the numbers that are engraved on a steel anvil and features interior lines that also mimic the rows of crops that stretch across the heartland. The uniforms are then complete with more “crop row” stripes on the shoulders and bottom of the pants.
The Cornhuskers notably wore a black and white version of their old home uniforms for last season’s blackout against USC. They also painted the logo at midfield and the end zones at Memorial Stadium in black to match the theme that evening.
This marks the first time since 1966 that Nebraska has worn something other than the Stick “N” or interlocking “NU” on its helmets, not including the leather-inspired design they wore as part of their throwback uniforms in 2018. They also have historically had a single stripe down the center.
