After new owners assumed control of the league last month, Australia’s Women’s National Basketball League now has a new logo as well.
The league unveiled the logo on their website and social media channels on Thursday, May 22. Underpinned by the slogan, “Ready to Rise,” the new logo depicts a purple W in the shape of a basketball net with a white hoop running around it. The logo has teal outlines, and “WNBL” is written out above it in teal.

The new brand is a symbol of power in motion, where elegance meets intensity and flight becomes a form of expression reflecting the talent, passion and energy of the league’s athletes.
The stylised ‘w’ motif is a nod to the net and hoop and transforms into a winged icon: part spirit, part future.
The WNBL is Australia’s longest-running women’s professional sports league, tracing its history back to 1981. Basketball Australia recently sold a majority interest in the league to a consortium led by the National Basketball League, the top men’s league in the country, and the Wollemi Capital Group Syndicate.
“The WNBL as we know it has been forged from a rich history and today, we enter a brand-new chapter of the league, one that is shaping the future of the game for our players, fans and clubs,” said WNBL CEO Jennie Sager on the league’s website. “This is one of many bold changes we have made since taking ownership in April, including a historic Collective Bargaining agreement which achieves a ground-breaking pro-rata pay parity deal.
“Similarly, for the rebrand, we sought feedback from players past and present, and stakeholders across the clubs and the league. The new logo represents our vision for the future of women’s basketball in Australia, one that is strong, dynamic, professional, and inspiring.”

Eight teams played in the WNBL in 2024-25:
- Adelaide Lightning
- Bendigo Spirit
- Geelong United
- Perth Lynx
- Southside Flyers (Dandenong, Victoria)
- Sydney Flames
- Townsville Fire
- University of Canberra Capitals

The Bendigo Spirit defeated the Townsville Fire 2-0 in a best-of-three series to claim the 2024-25 WNBL championship.

The WNBL will operate with eight teams again next season, but the name and logo of one of them is still up in the air. In September 2024, the owners of the Adelaide Lightning had informed the league of its intention to fold the franchise after the 2024-25 season, but reversed course following the NBL purchase announcement. The WNBL, however, rejected the owners’ application to rejoin the league and denied the Lightning entry into the 2025-26 season.
The South Australian Government stepped in and will fund a league-run team in Adelaide for the next three years while new owners are found. The previous owners still own the Lightning name and logo, though, so the team will likely have a new moniker when the 2025-26 WNBL season tips off in October.
