“New Year off to a cracking start!”

British broadcaster and journalist Piers Morgan started the new year with rather unexpected health news, as he was severely injured in London, which led to hospitalization and surgery. The television presenter confirmed the development on January 18, 2026, when he posted information about the incident on X, stating that the fall had resulted in a fractured femur.

The X post reads:

” BREAKING NEWS ‼️1. Tripped on small step. 2. In a London hotel restaurant. (🙄) 3. Fractured femur. 4. So badly I needed new hip. 5. Recovering in hospital. 6. Crutches for 6wks 7. No long-haul for 12 wks. 8. New Year off to a cracking start! 9. I blame Donald Trump.”

Morgan claimed that he was injured when he fell over a small step in a hotel restaurant in London. Later medical tests revealed that the injury was severe to the extent that surgical treatment was necessary. Physicians had to carry out a hip replacement surgery, and the broadcaster mentioned he is now recovering in the hospital under medical care.

In his update to the public, Piers Morgan said that his recovery would entail several weeks of limited movement, including using crutches, and that he had been told to avoid long-haul travel for about three months. He reported no post-surgical complications, and no additional medical issues have been revealed yet.

The post gained popularity after Morgan made a passing comment mentioning Donald Trump, jokingly stating that he “blamed” the US President for the incident. While no explanation was offered, the comment generated discussion due to the long-standing public history between the two figures, which has included professional collaboration as well as political disagreements.

Piers Morgan’s reference to Trump: Context from a long-standing public relationship

The association between Morgan and Donald Trump began in 2008, when the former participated in and won the reality TV show The Celebrity Apprentice, which Trump hosted. Subsequently, Morgan held a series of televised interviews with the US President throughout his first presidency.

In 2020, Piers Morgan publicly criticised Trump’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, including the president’s approach to public health messaging and leadership. As per CNN, the broadcaster criticized the president, saying he was “failing the American people.” Trump responded via social media, accusing Morgan of misrepresentation and suggesting a breach of loyalty.

However, in 2021, Morgan told ITV’s This Morning that he had known Donald Trump for many years and “still consider[s] him to be a friend,” despite past disagreements and criticisms.

Their association further deteriorated in 2022 during an episode of Piers Morgan Uncensored, when Trump abruptly walked out of an interview after being questioned on his continued claims regarding the 2020 US presidential election. Trump later publicly criticised the programme, describing it as “deceptively” edited, while Morgan defended his questioning.

When Piers Morgan tells Trump that 2020 was a free and fair election and Trump freaks out and leaves the interview because he doesn’t like to hear the truth.

However, Piers Morgan’s latest reference to Trump in his injury update is widely interpreted as contextual rather than implying any factual connection to the accident.
