NHL Needs To Embrace the Florida Man, Give Panthers an Outdoor Game

Florida Man, have we got some news for you!

We know you have a lot going on. You find your way into crazy situations all the time. There are countless headlines about the chaos you have created:

  • “Florida man arrested for keeping alligators in his backyard swimming pool, FWC says”
  • “Florida man assaults mom with spaghetti sauce, hides in bushes from police: affidavit”
  • “Florida man hid inside closed Walgreens, helped himself to candy, chips, soda, cigarettes, deputies say.”

However, of all the crazy headlines about you—and there are A LOT—there never has been a headline that looked something like this:

  • “Florida man watches outdoor hockey game in shorts and flip-flops.”

Think this is a long shot? Think again.

A report from Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman this week said the NHL is closing in on an agreement with the Florida Panthers to host an outdoor game in Miami. The game could take place as soon as next season at LoanDepot Park, home of the Miami Marlins.

Now, if any brilliant scientists are reading this right now, we know what you are thinking.

Don’t they play hockey on ice? Isn’t Miami kind of warm?

Details, details.

Make it happen, NHL. This might be a total disaster, and there’s only one way to find out.

The forecast in Miami calls for temperatures in the upper 70s this week, and it is forecast to hit 80 degrees next week. It’s hard to know what the temperatures would be for an outdoor game a year from now, but a betting person probably would put money on “above freezing.”

Still, there are ways to keep it cold inside the rink. The ice might be slushy and the work crews might be busy between whistles treating any problem areas, but it is possible to play.

Besides, the Panthers would be a great team to put in the national spotlight for an outdoor game. Florida won the Stanley Cup last season and has star players such as Matthew Tkachuk, Sam Reinhard, Alexander Barkov and Sergei Bobrovsky.

The NHL could use some juice for its outdoor games as well. The format was so exciting when it was introduced—the first NHL Winter Classic took place in 2008 at the old Ralph Wilson Stadium, home of the Buffalo Bills—but has lost some steam after more than a decade and a half.

So why not try something new and different? Why not give the Panthers a turn? They, along with the Utah Hockey Club, are the only teams never to play in an outdoor game.

Here’s hoping the NHL follows through and gives this game to the Panthers.

Because Florida Man deserves a chance to see an outdoor game in person, even if he might be on Santa’s naughty list:

  • “Florida man who received ‘Waffle House’ tattoo arrested after refusing to pay for it: affidavit”
  • “Florida man pulls out machete after bar refuses to let him sing another karaoke song: deputies”
  • “Florida man accused of stealing over $1,000 worth of toothbrushes”

We’ll see you at the game, Florida Man. Please keep your machete and toothbrushes at home.

Oh, and make sure to wear a sleeveless shirt. We really want to see that Waffle House tattoo.
