20-year-old rising Czech star Nikola Bartunkova has made quite the impression with her performances at the 2026 Monterrey Open. Currently ranked World No. 38, Bartunkova began her Monterrey campaign with a relatively comfortable straight-set win over Antonia Ruzic. However, since then, the Czech youngster has had to grind out results in her favor, first against Liang En-shuo of Taiwan and then compatriot Darja Vidmanova in the second round and quarterfinals respectively.
Meanwhile, Elise Mertens, the World No. 24 from Belgium and the second seed in Monterrey, received a first-round bye and then survived a second-round scare against Panna Udvardy of Hungary. The Belgian was much more clinical in the quarterfinals though, as she made short work of Ukrainian star Yuliia Starodubtseva.
Bartunkova entered Monterrey with a formidable 29-18 win-loss record this season, while Mertens’ win-loss record ahead of the WTA 500 event stood at 24-16, making the pair’s upcoming clash a difficult one to predict.

On paper, Mertens is the favorite to beat Bartunkova and reach the 2026 Monterrey Open final. The Belgian’s aggressive all-court game thrives on hard courts, and she should be confident of defeating her young Czech opponent given how she dominated their Australian Open clash earlier this year. Mertens won that match 6-0, 6-4, and she has all the tools at her disposal to engineer a similar result again in Monterrey.
However, Bartunkova has shown in her last two matches that she is a fierce competitor and can go the distance if the match demands it. Also, the Czech’s game, noted for its aggression, unpredictability and variety, should definitely trouble Mertens. Ultimately though, Mertens’ superior hard-court experience, as well as the fact that she has spent less time on court in Monterrey than Bartunkova, should tilt things in the Belgian’s favor.
