Reddit Enables Users to Convert Comments to Posts, Adds Comment Analytics

Reddit’s added a new option to turn comments into posts of their own in the app, in order to encourage more conversations on key topics of interest, while it’s also got some new analytics tools for users.

Which won’t have the same value as they do in other apps, but could provide some interesting data points either way.

First off, on comments-to-posts. As you can see in the examples below, now, if you see a comment that deserves more focus (and shared comments are enabled within that subreddit), you can convert it into a post of its own, with a new title, and additional notes to provide more context.

Reddit posts update

As explained by Reddit:

The comment section is where you find some of the best stuff on Reddit, but sometimes your (objectively great) comments can get buried. Now there’s a new way to spotlight and re-engage with past conversations.

You can re-share any comment, though Reddit does note that each community can opt not to allow shared comments as posts if they choose.

It could be a simple way to encourage more specific conversation about key elements, providing Reddit with more discussion fodder, lifted from its popular comment sections.

You’ll also be able to see how your comments are resonating, with new comment insights.

Reddit post analytics

As you can see in these screenshots, now, by tapping the “Insights” tab beneath your comments, you’ll be able to view data on:

  • Upvotes: The number of upvotes your comment has received.
  • Upvote Ratio: The ratio of upvotes to downvotes on your comment.
  • Replies: The number of replies to your comment.
  • Views: How many times your comment has been viewed, including a geographical breakdown.
  • Shares: How many times people have shared your comment.
  • Awards: The number of awards your comment has received.

I mean, I’m not sure how much this really matters, as Reddit creators don’t get the same growth and engagement benefits in profile building as they do on other apps. But it will provide more context for Reddittors, which will help to better contextualize your contributions to your favorite communities.

Reddit’s also adding automatic saves for comments, which will keep your in-progress replies around as drafts, while desktop users will now be able to add text alongside images, videos, and link posts.

Some handy updates, which will be of specific value to certain Reddit users.

Reddit says that all of these updates are being rolled out from today.
