Team USA’s World Baseball Classic roster will have some late changes after Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Corbin Carroll suffered a hamate bone injury this week.
According to MLB insider Jeff Passan, Carroll is set to undergo surgery, ruling him out of next month’s tournament.
“News: Arizona Diamondbacks star outfielder Corbin Carroll broke the hamate bone in his right hand and is undergoing surgery today, sources tell ESPN,” Passan wrote. “He will miss the World Baseball Classic and his ability to play Opening Day is now in question.”

With Carroll out of the picture, Boston Red Sox outfielder Roman Anthony has emerged as a potential replacement for the WBC. MLB Network’s Jon Morosi reported that Anthony is one of the candidates under consideration for the role.
“[World Baseball Classic] news: USA Baseball officials are working through possible injury replacements for Corbin Carroll,” Morosi wrote. “Steven Kwan, Tyler Soderstrom, Riley Greene, Roman Anthony, James Wood, Wyatt Langford and Kyle Stowers are under consideration, per source.”
Anthony had a strong rookie season for the Red Sox in 2025, slashing .292/.396/.463 with eight home runs in 71 games. However, Anthony’s season ended early due to an oblique injury, which could complicate his insurance situation for the WBC.
Cleveland Guardians’ No. 1 prospect Travis Bazzana set for WBC debut for Australia
While several MLB stars will feature in the WBC next month, Cleveland Guardians’ top prospect Travis Bazzana, who is yet to make his major league debut, is set to represent Team Australia.
Bazzana, who was selected with the No. 1 pick in the 2024 MLB draft, is also expected to make his major league debut later this year. The 23-year-old infielder is looking forward to the tournament.
“Representing Australia,” Bazzana said, “the opportunity to impact the way a country views baseball is huge, where there’s a lot of room for growth and a lot of room for improvement.
“I see the WBC and different tournaments as an opportunity to maybe have someone look up to us in Australian baseball and want to be like that in the future.”
Bazzana batted .245 with nine homers, 39 RBIs, 66 walks and 91 strikeouts in a injury-riddled 2025 that saw him limited to 84 games.
