The government of Pedro Sánchez has taken another step in its strategy of wastefulness and neglect of the real problems facing Spaniards.
In a move that can only be described as electoral and absurd, a decree is being prepared to extend the Minimum Vital Income (IMV) to Spaniards residing abroad.
Yes, you read that correctly: while millions of compatriots within national territory struggle to make ends meet, the socialist executive plans to give away public money to those who do not even live in Spain.
The Absolute Failure of the IMV in Spain.
The IMV, presented as the government’s flagship solution to combat poverty, has turned out to be a monumental fiasco.
According to data from the Independent Authority for Fiscal Responsibility (AIReF), in 2023, 56% of households entitled to this benefit did not even apply for it.
This means that more than half of the families that could benefit from this aid do not receive it, whether due to lack of awareness, excessive bureaucracy, or distrust in institutions.
Moreover, independent reports indicate that only 12% of citizens living below the poverty line have successfully received the IMV, a figure far from the government’s initial promises.
In other words, out of every 100 people who need this assistance, only 12 are receiving it.
An Electoral and Misplaced Measure.
Instead of focusing on solving these issues and ensuring that the IMV reaches those who truly need it within our borders, Sánchez chooses a measure that can only be interpreted as a desperate attempt to secure votes abroad.
Extending the IMV to residents overseas is not only an insult to Spaniards suffering here but also further proof of the government’s disconnection from national reality.
This decision contrasts sharply with the state of neglect that thousands of families in Spain are experiencing.
For example, in Navarra, the Chamber of Comptos has detected «weaknesses in the complex management» of guaranteed income and the IMV, highlighting the inefficiency in the administration of these benefits.
The Left’s Obsession with Squandering Public Money.
It’s not the first time the left has demonstrated its ability to waste the resources of all Spaniards.
While waiting lists in public healthcare skyrocket, education faces an unprecedented crisis, and public safety is compromised, the government prefers to allocate funds to populist measures that seek more electoral gain than the well-being of the nation.
The obsession with pleasing everyone—except the Spaniards who work hard every day to lift the country—is a constant in the socialist agenda.
This extension of the IMV to residents abroad is just the tip of the iceberg of a series of policies that prioritize international image and political correctness over the real needs of citizens.
The Danger of Perpetuating Poverty.
Far from being an effective solution, the poor handling of the IMV is contributing to the entrenchment of poverty.
The Popular Party has requested an evaluation of this benefit and improvements in the social and labor inclusion of recipients to prevent the aid from becoming a trap that perpetuates dependency on the state.
However, the government seems more interested in expanding the scope of a failed measure than in correcting its deficiencies.
Conclusion: A Mockery of Hardworking Spaniards.
Pedro Sánchez’s decision to extend the Minimum Vital Income to residents abroad is an insult to all Spaniards who, through their effort and work, sustain this country.
While the basic needs of many remain unmet and essential infrastructure deteriorates, the government prefers to allocate resources to measures that serve only to clean up its image and secure votes beyond our borders.
It is time for the left to stop playing with everyone’s money and focus on policies that truly benefit those in need within Spain.
Enough of populist and electoralist measures that only serve to generate headlines but do nothing to solve the real problems of the nation.
Spaniards deserve a government that prioritizes their needs, manages resources responsibly, and abandons these gimmicks that serve only to cling to power at the expense of collective well-being.
