Claressa Shields is undoubtedly one of the most accomplished female boxers of all time. The self-proclaimed ‘GWOAT’ of boxing believes she can beat many of her male counterparts, especially Rolando Romero; suffice to say, fans are irritated.
Shields is a five-division world champion and the first boxer in history to become an undisputed champion in three weight divisions. Earlier in 2019, Shields had name-dropped Keith Thurman, Shawn Porter, and Gennady Golovkin as some of the male boxers she could beat.
Now, during a recent appearance on the #RESPECTFULLY podcast with Justin Laboy, Shields proclaimed that she’d make light work of the reigning WBA welterweight champion Rolando Romero:
“I’d beat ‘Rolly’ [Romero], he is a world champion. ‘Rolly’ Romero. Listen, I think ‘Rolly’ is very unorthodox, he is very strong, but I’m way taller than him, way longer than him, and I’ve got better boxing skills… It’s hard for somebody smaller to hurt somebody bigger. I walk around at 185 [pounds]. He fights at 140, or is it 147?”

While Floyd Mayweather’s uncle Jeff, a former world champion, acknowledges that Claressa Shields is a great pugilist, he believes she wouldn’t be able to compete with even low-level male professionals.
During a 2025 interview on the Mayweather Channel, when the topic of Shields challenging Keith Thurman came up, Jeff said:
“No, I don’t think she can beat Keith Thurman. I don’t think she can beat, not even a top-10 guy, she probably can’t beat some guys that are not even close to being ranked.”
The former IBO super featherweight champion added:
“I know how this works. I used to spar with Laila Ali, and Laila Ali is a beast to women, but when I sparred with her, half the time I would basically kind of like play with her. She hit me with some hard shots from time to time, but it wasn’t like getting hit by a guy.” [1:11 mark of the interview]
