The drama stars Ren Yankai and Kang Ning in the lead roles, alongside Shi Qingyan and Chen Yucheng. Adapted from Ye Wushuang’s novel Wu Zuo Nu Fu Ma, the series combines historical romance with revenge, forensic investigation and political intrigue. The story of The Legendary Chitose-Sama begins five years before the main events, when the Jun family, led by Qin Yu, the military governor of Nanyang, becomes implicated in a treason case involving a family genealogy. The accusation results in the family’s property being confiscated and its members being executed. Jun Qinglan survives the massacre, but her fiancé, Li Congyao, fails to protect her and cuts her cheek, leaving her disfigured.
After escaping, Qinglan changes her identity and presents herself as a man named Qinglan. She enters the Dali Temple as a low-ranking coroner and begins working with the dead to investigate the truth behind suspicious cases. Her ultimate objective is to overturn the case against her family, establish their innocence, and identify the people responsible for their destruction.
One of her earliest investigations concerns a wealthy young man from the capital who is found drowned. The case brings Li Congyao back into Qinglan’s life. He has since become Prince Duan and is assigned to oversee the investigation.
When he meets the apparently unremarkable young coroner, he senses something familiar about her and begins to pay closer attention to her. His suspicions eventually put Qinglan’s carefully protected identity at risk.
Qinglan’s work at the Dali Temple eventually brings her into several other unusual investigations. By solving these cases, Qinglan gradually gains recognition for her skills while continuing to pursue the much larger mystery connected to her family.
Ren Yankai plays Li Congyao, Prince Duan of Northern Xia and the second legitimate son of Marquis Shenwu, who is described as one of the founding heroes. Li Congyao is initially portrayed as an aloof and physically weak man who frequently coughs up blood. His family’s circumstances change after his father and brothers discover the whereabouts of descendants of the deposed emperor and are subsequently silenced by the emperor.
Li Congyao later gives up his military authority because of his recurring illness and is confined to his residence as Prince Duan. The events surrounding his family contribute to a significant change in his personality. He becomes increasingly cold and ruthless, creating a stark contrast with the man Qinglan once knew and loved.
Kang Ning plays Jun Qinglan, whose journey takes her through several identities and circumstances. She begins as a wealthy official’s daughter, becomes a survivor of a family massacre and disfigurement, and later disguises herself as a man to work as a coroner. Rather than relying on others to uncover the truth, she uses her knowledge of autopsy and physical evidence to investigate cases herself.
Qinglan’s reunion with Li Congyao creates the drama’s central personal conflict. Their relationship consequently develops through a cycle of resistance, confrontation, suspicion, and attempts to discover the truth. Qinglan must deal not only with her desire for revenge but also with her unresolved feelings toward the man who was once her fiancé.
Shi Qingyan and Chen Yucheng are also part of the cast. The Legendary Chitose-Sama is directed by Chen Shiyi and Xie Shuai, while Ye Wushuang, the author of the source novel, is credited as the writer.
The Legendary Chitose-Sama‘s central mystery develops through Qinglan’s examination of bodies and reconstruction of events.
