RIP TikTok Notes. We hardly knew thee.
Less than a year after the launch of its separate photo-sharing app, TikTok is discontinuing the experiment, and shutting down TikTok Notes for all users.
Well, all users that could access it, that is, as TikTok Notes was only ever made available in certain nations.

As you can see in this notification, shared by app researcher Jonah Manzano, Notes users are now being informed of the platform’s untimely demise, which is coming on May 8th. The notification also urges Notes account holders to check out its other app, Lemon8, in order to continue their “creative journey.”
Which is no real surprise, because as I reported when Notes was launched last April, it is essentially the same as Lemon8, just without the product focus (Notes below on the left, Lemon8 on the right).

TikTok users that have a linked Notes account are also being informed of the app’s pending demise.

Is it a big deal?
I mean, probably not. TikTok wouldn’t be shutting it down if it was seeing any significant usage, and again, it was only ever made available in certain regions anyway, so most people probably don’t even know what Notes is.
But essentially, this was an experiment, and an attempt for TikTok to expand its cultural impact.
The development of a separate, still-image-focused platform seemed to be sparked by the rise of the Instagram-like Xiaohongshu in China, with TikTok looking for more ways to expand its market footprint, and veer into other areas.
But again, Lemon8 is largely the same thing, and it seems like TikTok now agrees with this.
So, no more Notes app, for the few people that were using it.
Another social platform gone to the cloud, never to be accessed again.
