Top 5 Blockbuster Destinations for Donovan Mitchell if Cavaliers Star Turns Down $277 Million Mega Extension

One of the Cleveland Cavaliers‘ top concerns is Donovan Mitchell‘s future. The NBA player, who will make $50.1 million in 2026–2027, is still under contract. Mitchell can decide on what to do with his future the following season with his $53.8 million player option.

According to The Athletic’s Sam Amick, Mitchell is eligible to sign a four-year, $277 million extension this summer. Or he could wait until the next offseason and sign a five-year, $358.6 million extension to stay with the Cavaliers. If he rejects any of the offers from the franchise, the team is ready to move on from him, Fred Katz of The Athletic reported.

Here are five teams that could land the seven-time All-Star if he parts ways with Cleveland.

Top 5 Blockbuster Destinations for Donovan Mitchell

#1 Golden State Warriors

The Golden State Warriors are expected to go after any star player available in the summer. There have been rumors that the Warriors could go after stars like Giannis Antetokounmpo, Kawhi Leonard and LeBron James.

Donovan Mitchell could also be a part of that mix. The Warriors have been looking for a star player who can take over the franchise. Their star player, Steph Curry, is in the twilight years of his career, and the organization wants to stay competitive.

#2 Miami Heat

Much like the Warriors, the Miami Heat wants to go after a star player this summer. They’ve been part of the Antetokounmpo rumors over the past few seasons. After the team’s elimination in the play-in tournament, there could be a significant change within the team.

If they fail to trade for the Milwaukee Bucks star, however, Donovan Mitchell could be another option. Although he isn’t the Greek Freak, he can still provide 25 points a night. Having a go-to scorer like Mitchell would be a major upgrade for Miami.

#3 LA Lakers

The LA Lakers could have an open spot this summer if LeBron James doesn’t return. Although the team doesn’t have the cap space to sign Mitchell, they could orchestrate a sign-and-trade for the NBA star.

It will give Luka Doncic another reliable scoring option, taking off some offensive responsibility. However, since the Lakers would have to open their salary cap, it may also have an impact on the other important players.

#4 New York Knicks

Donovan Mitchell was linked to the New York Knicks before he was traded to the Cavaliers. The NBA player is still associated with the team because he was raised in Elmsford, New York.

The team is doing well with Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns as its best players. If the team doesn’t meet its championship goals this season, Mitchell could be allowed to sign with the Knicks, which could lead to a significant squad upheaval.

#5 Brooklyn Nets

The Brooklyn Nets need an upgrade offensively, and Donovan Mitchell might be their best bet. The Nets had two score-first players in Michael Porter Jr. and Cam Thomas this season. However, it was obvious that the team needed someone more reliable, especially in late-game situations.

The Nets are also close to the NBA star’s hometown, which could be beneficial when it comes to recruiting Mitchell. Brooklyn also has enough space to sign the star guard. He may become their franchise star and return to the postseason as a result.
