Urban Meyer suggests Kyle Whittingham can lead a “cleansing” at Michigan after Sherrone Moore’s messy teaching exit

The Michigan Wolverines hired Kyle Whittingham as their 22nd head coach. The former Utah Utes HC replaced Sherrone Moore after he was let go on December 10, 2025.

College football legend Urban Meyer is a big fan of Whittingham and believes that the experienced head coach is the right person for the Michigan job.

“Right now, they need someone to steady that boat because there was a time that boat had holes in it. It’s been that way for several years.”

“I get really upset with the guys at Fox when they say ‘everybody is doing it.’ No, everybody is not doing that stuff. No, that’s not happening.”

“There needs to be a cleansing, there needs to be one, and this is the guy to do it. I know who he is hiring, because he’s already told me. He’s going to hire a hell of a staff. He’s going to give everything he can for five years and try to get that program back to go lift the ultimate prize,” said Meyer on the Third Option Show.

Whittingham is fresh off 21 seasons with the Utah Utes as their head coach. He left after guiding the Utes to ten wins in the 2025 campaign.

The Michigan Wolverines fired Sherrone Moore on December 10, 2025, after an investigation was conducted by the school. The investigation found that Moore had engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.

Kyle Whittingham’s Michigan has been active in the transfer portal

Kyle Whittingham has wasted no time in setting up the Michigan Wolverines for the 2026 season. The program has been active via the transfer portal.

According to Yahoo Sports, key cornerback Zeke Berry is set to withdraw from the NCAA Transfer Portal. Berry had entered the portal on January 2, 2025.

Berry is one of the Wolverines’ best defenders. He earned All-Big Ten honors in the 2024 and 2025 seasons. Berry amassed a stat line of 33 tackles, 10 pass breakups and an interception.

Despite the hiring of Kyle Whittingham, the Wolverines are losing two impressive talents to the portal. Those players are quarterback Mikey Keene and running back Bryson Kuzdzal.

Keene is a graduate assistant and spent an appearance-less, solitary season with Michigan after playing for two other programs.

Kuzdzal played his part for the Michigan Wolverines. The running back amassed a stat line of 76 carries, 326 rushing yards and four touchdowns. He’ll be on the lookout for a program where he’s in the running for RB1.
