Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky ran to ABC for an interview on Sunday to respond to Trump’s fury toward him and whine about the United States not giving enough support for him to try and win the war.
As The Gateway Pundit reported, Trump went off on Zelensky yesterday after announcing a deal with Russia to sell diesel to the US. While speaking to reporters on Friday, Trump blasted the Ukrainian President’s refusal to make peace and blamed him for the continuation of the war with Russia after Ukraine’s latest attack on a Russian oil export hub.
“I think it’s time for Ukraine to get a new president,” Trump said, blaming Zelensky for high oil and diesel prices.
Trump later doubled down last night, saying Zelensky “should have an election” and that “Putin would like to see a settlement strongly,” but “Zelensky does not want to make a deal.”
Zelensky on Sunday told ABC’s Jonathan Karl that it’s Russia’s fault that the war has continued, calling for a ceasefire. “Don’t attack us. Don’t kill our children. We will stop attacking your diesel. And I think it’s fair, fair deal,” he said. It should be noted that Zelensky turned down a US-backed ceasefire back in February 2025 when he and Trump had an explosive meeting in the Oval Office.
Zelensky further responded to Trump’s calls for an election and new president, claiming “it’s up to our people” to choose a leader as he continues to hold the country under martial law, barring an election.
“President Trump said that that we need, Ukraine needs new president. So, first of all, with all due respect to President Trump, it’s up to our society, up to our people, to choose one or another leader,” he said. “Yes, we are in war, and how to do elections is really difficult. Not only that it goes absolutely not secured and it goes out of our law, out of our constitution, but the main thing is to have security infrastructure for this to give possibility people to vote.”
“Of course, it’s up to Ukrainians when to vote, how to do it, and to choose one or another person… I know that Putin wanted very much to change the president in Ukraine, I understand it, and if President Trump really wants to have some changes during elections,” he continued. “So please tell Putin: give us two months, 60 days of total ceasefire, 60 days, and we will organize elections.
He went on to blame Trump for the rising cost of oil solely on the war with Iran, but said it’s easier to blame Ukraine. “These people can’t find a key how to stop Putin, because it’s more difficult to stop Putin than to pressure others, because it’s more simple to speak about the prices and connect it with Ukraine,” he said.

He later appeared to become emotional near the end of the interview while calling for US support to keep fighting the war and “stop Putin.”
“We count that United States will help us to do this… I think this is the main goal to stop him. This is the main deal to stop this war, and we count on American support,” he said.
“We will defend ourselves because otherwise we will lose our life and homes, our freedom, independence, Ukraine. We can’t lose it, and the truth is on our side,” he added while choking up and appearing to almost cry.
