Memphis Depay has hit out at Corinthians, accusing the Brazilian club of breaching an agreement after they decided against renewing his contract.
In a post on his official X handle, Depay expressed his disappointment after learning of Corinthians’ decision not to proceed with the renewal.

He claimed a new deal had been agreed upon with different departments within the club and said he would “not leave this unacceptable behaviour unsanctioned”.
“Very disappointed to read that Corinthians decided not to honour our agreement in place to extend my contract for 2 more years. This renewal was explicitly agreed upon by the president as well as the sporting, legal and financial department. Some people decided however to breach this engagement…,” he wrote.
“I didn’t want this situation and always respected the club throughout the process, but now I am forced to react strongly in order to preserve my interests. In the upcoming days I will speak publicly but rest assured that I will not leave this unacceptable behaviour unsanctioned.”
The Dutchman joined Corinthians in 2024 on a two-year contract, which was due to run out on September 9, 2026. According to reports from Brazil, Depay had agreed to change the terms of his previous contract to continue his career at Corinthians.
This included a salary reduction and changes to bonuses. He had also agreed to extend his stay for another two years instead of the three-year extension he initially wanted and to pay money he is owed by the club in installments. However, the forward is now a free agent after Corinthians refused to extend his contract.
Why did Corinthians decide not to extend Memphis Depay’s contract?
On Tuesday, Corinthians announced that Memphis Depay’s contract would not be extended. The club explained that its decision was based on financial reasons and its commitment to responsible management and financial sustainability.
“Sport Club Corinthians Paulista has decided not to renew the contract of athlete Memphis Depay. This decision was taken solely and exclusively in consideration of the financial health of our institution, which demands rigorous balance and responsibility in the management of available resources. We would like to express our deep gratitude to player Memphis Depay and his entire team, who from the start of negotiations sought the best possible agreement,” a statement read.
“However, after careful analysis, exclusively financial reasons and the commitment to responsible management of the Club prevailed. Given Corinthians’ current and future financial obligations, it became clear that taking on a new commitment of this magnitude would not be compatible, at this moment, with the financial balance we need to preserve to ensure the institution’s sustainability.”
The club added that it will hold a press conference in the coming days, during which President Osmar Stabile will provide further details about the circumstances that led to the decision not to extend the player’s contract.
